Beat a top side, get big points. beat a lowly side get naff all

Then we get a win and a draw and we are No.3? After how badly we bat? Thank Mr Southee and Mr Boult. Great as they are and how the lesser batsmen have often saved us, thats not No.3, sorry

The ICC rankings do weight performance based on who you are playing. They are based over 4 years with more recent games given higher significance. The rankings look pretty much correct at the moment.

India and South Africa form the top group. They are the two best sides in the world at the moment.

Then a fair way back in a group are NZ, England Australia and Sri Lanka. They can all beat each other, with the home side generally winning.

Pakistan are a tier to themselves with the West Indies and Bangladesh in a group and then miles away are Zimbabwe being absolutely awful.

What would your rankings be if you think they are fake?

The effort and intelligence is admirable but you're wasting your time. For a couple of posters, this thread is basically a facts-free zone.

Yes I truely do.

For a number of reasons.

We havnt beaten a quality side in a series for, geeze this might be the last time.

We havnt beaten Eng in a series in 34 years and that was our only other time.

We have been very consistent in test cricket at home for a fair while now. What puts us back down to 6th will be us touring. Which is the direct opposite of Latham. The results are based over a few years I believe, obviously the newer wins taking more weight.

What I do find ironic is slipping form 1st in the world in t20 to 4th and 1st not that long ago in ODIs to 4th.

For a non test playing nation wee are batting above our average.

We beat England in England in 1999. It was a while ago but not 34 years.

4 years then os ot, thanks for clarification. I thought it was 3.

I think its our consistency at home over the last 5 years that have got us a top 3 spot. We suck when we tour, aside from Latham who decides he likes cricket and Williamson/Taylor/Watling

But overall we have been really good at home recently. Im sure beating Eng though had a massive points weighting on it and Aus recent SA performance given they just recently beat Eng 4-0 as well. Which will be reversed when they tour eng such is the nature of the last 15 years.

I think beating in India here in a series 3 years ago will have had some weight as well.

ENG have lost the last 12 tests from memory?

We go well at home, that should weighted. When we are at home, everyone else is an away game

I have found this summer to be disappointing. WE have a lot of talent, and you mentioned once we are just battlers. Its either the middle order fails or its the top order, and sometimes we had lesser lights who plucked an innings out of nowhere. We are so inconsistent its not funny. Summer Black Caps has just been scrappy cricket. And we are now the 3rd best cricket nation in test cricket????

We got ODI and T20 rankings by beating teams like Windies. Then Pakistan, but when they got used to our pitches, too good for us.

But No.3 in test cricket, something is wrong somewhere.

The last few (3) years as I mentioned NZ W9 D3 L4

All losses coming from Australia (2 series in a single year ouch, that year we could easily have won over in Aus 2/3), India, SA.

The draws include one against England in England.

Thats a pretty impressive record to be fair, even if most of the wins are from lower ranked teams.

It would, as would who we beat. ENG must have been near us, so I can only assume the win against ENG was big. Despite how untidy and below par it was from both sides. I read there is no weighting for away games, thats silly. So a team happens to play at home a lot one year. or away a lot one year, that skews the rankings when you compare the side's ability

I mean it was seriously dark up north, I think it was a darn fair call, you shouldnt be finishing matches in the dark. Humble saying there is plenty of light as the sun is setting lol.

When I look at our scores, would have only taken more of the top to middle in the last innings to stand up and we would have won that test match as well.

I love sport and Rugby League, but i HATE winter for one reason, no local cricket.

Its fair to say NZ plays the whole mix, I think they all do, but look at how much Eng plays Aus vs Eng plays NZ.

NZ were 6th at the start of Season. The result leap frogged a lot of teams.

Whenever NZ draws a test with a good team thats a positive, but because we lose where some of the other teams like pakistan have really high scoring players, but for whatever reason are in a slump, we play them and win and its not counting for a lot, west indies, doesnt do much for us.

Our next big step if we were ever possible of is to beat India, South Africa, or Australia in a test.

I really feel that double series we had in 2013 i think against Aus, I remember it so well, we could easily have won two of the tests, the the fickle nature of cricket and some captaincy error on our behalf lost both games.

We can only aim high.

I think more importantly though we restore or t20 supremacy with batsmen outside the test squad. I think this test team we last finished with is near on as good as we are going to get, especially in the sub continet with sodhi, that would be sureal for him. Im talking on a good day when our good batsmen dont fail. but to be fair so did Engs. the only thing id like to see change is maybe not play Wagner and replace him with a batsmen in Guptill at 5/6. Which means more overs for Sodhi, but williamson having to get back into bowling.

But white ball, we just arent playing the aggressive players that are out there, sticking wth the old guard and keeping players who have proven to fail.

T20 we really need to follow the sloggers. We cant be playing our test team in t20s......

You are in AKL, here in CHC that day it was nice and light. Sun sets later here. It clouded over, then they moved on, leaving half the sky, including where the sun was, sunny. In fact here (Aidanfield) it was cloudy and not bad light, but the game was sunny there with clear shadows

A few minutes max. Mate you could see on the screen it was dim, well below even spin allowment. 30 minutes from complete sunset. They werent going to bowl us out before the umpires pulled them off regarldess of Wagner asking for review, it was just funny.His innings and Sodhis 168 balls saved the test when on paper it looked quite feasible for us to get skittled. That 50 jumped him from 22 to 25avg. Clearly worked hard on the batting. If he keeps improving our tail could be quite strong with Southee doing the same. They were going to call stumps I think without his review.

Its not about light and shadows. their light meters are what makes the ruling.

One thing that does annoy me is that we dont start play untill 11am in middle of summer. It should be 1030. If they can play until, even seen 7pm sometimes there is plenty of light at 10:30 to start play. Could save a lot of overs.

You must have enjoyed the season and agree even though we were brittle, and our tail saved us often, it was good to be a winner outside the t20s and the close Eng ODIs.
