I enjoyed seeing Vettel get amongst it for much of the race, and robbed of a higher finish by that hopeless pit stop.  I'd like to see his F1 career finish with a bit of a flourish rather than plodding around out of the points weekend after weekend.

Seems like Aston Martin are doing good things to their cars, it does feel like they have improved the competitiveness of the package recently.  Looking forward to seeing what Alonso will be able to extract from it in 2023.

Liam Lawson getting the second FP1 drive with AT tomorrow morning at 7am NZ time, if anyone is interested to have a look at how he does.

He did ok, was only on hards so no real guide although he was midfield early when all on hards, well ahead of the other young drivers, so that was good. Then his engine failed at the end

Liam was fastest driver of the drivers who only ran hards. It was a shame he didn't get a run on the softs.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Yeah, Lawson went pretty good I thought.  I followed him most of the session in the car cam, his lines from lap to lap were a little inconsistent but that's inexperience in the car and perhaps trying different lines to find some time.  But, I'm sure it would have been a confidence boost to beat all the rookies on show.

That's both the AT FP1 slots completed now but Red Bull still have one slot they have to complete.  I wonder if Lawson is in the running for that, I guess he's got as much chance as any of the other RB Juniors.

Liam Lawson (AT03-03, Car 40)
First Practice Session – Best lap: 1:23.861, pos. 16th, 19 laps

“It’s been great to be back on track with Scuderia AlphaTauri after my last shot out in Spa. This time we played a bit more with set-up changes, as the more I drive the car the more accurate feedback I can give. Due to the Pirelli test in FP2 we saved a set of tyres for that, so I only ran on one set, which I believe most the juniors did today. It’s a really interesting circuit. I’d been on the sim a lot obviously, but when I first drove it was quite eye opening, there’s very low grip and it’s extremely slippery, especially through some of the high-speed areas. Driving through the stadium though was crazy, the atmosphere is incredible, even when I had to stop the car there, they were all cheering. Sadly, we had to stop because we had a loss of pressure. However, I was able to complete most the session anyway, so it didn’t impact too much.”

Jonathan Eddolls (Chief Race Engineer)

“It was great to have Liam back driving for us in FP1, this time taking over Yuki’s car. He did a very good job, particularly as he only ran a single hard tyre in that session. He got quickly up to speed and was setting competitive lap times even against the experienced drivers. We had several aero test items which we completed with him and captured very good data to help us with the setup direction. His running came to an end just before the end of the session, as we spotted a loss of pressure, but the mechanics did a great job to get the car repaired and ready for Yuki for FP2.

Great quali. Max will be third at best at turn 1 even if he nails the start. Sergio there to take advantage of any Dan Dare turn 1 moves.

Given Max now holds most race wins in a single season stat, you could pretty safely have said this about most races this year.

It's sadly settled down to a one horse race again this year.

That said, Mercedes are now close to fighting for second in the constructors race from Ferrari, so hopefully we'll have at least one more team, hopefully more up the front eventually.

Year started well with a new platform and Ferrari looking super strong, but they've faded massively come race day now, for a variety of reasons.

Alpine and McLaren getting close again now too.

I think the high altitude hid the draggyness of the Mercedes and while all cars are affected, those with draggy cars are affected the most... this made them more competative and gives an indication that if they can fix the this issue then they could be up there with other QOL fixes to the car.  Not sure why Ferarri where so off the speed here, but they where slow compared to the RBs and Mercs...

Hands of to RB though, the car is a monster when in the hands of a talented driver but anyone know why Perez isn't performing aswell?  I'm assuming the car is predominately setup for the lead driver in terms of style rather than balanced for both?

I'd really be interested to see to what degree this can be accommodated.

Obviously the lead driver would get the final say but I do wonder if it's still a case of who can adapt to the new car the best.

Both will have options to adjust brake bias/wing angles etc during setup, so do suspect it's a case of which driver can work with the machine more than the machine specifically being built in a wat that will clearly favour another.

Same conversation came up with Lando/DR recently when that was the argument being put forward for DRs poor performance.
Turns out Lando hated the car too, but was just able to work with it better.

I don't really buy into that. There are two cars, they can be setup differently, if one driver like a pointy front end, and the other prefers more balance, or one thats more steady on tyre wear. Perez is very good, but most of them are, Max is outstanding. He's had the least car damage of all the drivers this season, despite completing most races in s shorter time, i.e. a faster average laptime. In a car that unlike Mercedes from 2014 is not 2 seconds per lap faster, yet his run might indicate that. RBR is not the fastest car, they use the wing to catch up top end speed. But they have the best overall package

I hope Mercedes beat Ferrari, they deserve it, been a tough year. Im sure they will drop the zero sidepod for a traditional sidepod in 2023, they will be back if that happens

Unsure why Danny Ricc was driver of the day.

Because he absolutely dominated in the last 1/3 of the race on the softs.

Anyone on new softs would have done the same when everyone else is on old mediums and slow hards. Not really a driver of the day spectacle
