Can I just say that indoor cycling is just weird. Various races with odd names in which they hang about cycling as slow as possible and then burst into life in the last lap. Why not actually race from the beginning?

panther2: Break dancing at the Olympics is a joke

I'm lucky enough to have seen some high level break dancing live which was incredible. I think of it as rhythmic gymnastics , very rhythmic gymnastics.

It’s almost like there are tactics and strategy involved. How rude!

While both Lisa and Lydia deserve the award it should go to Lydia based on the number of people playing golf in the world.

Just my 2c worth but both women are winners no matter what.

I agree. A LOT of competitors and a lot of opportunities to mess it up and drop out of contention. A  sport that requires deft skill and more importantly, nerve, is a good watch. That Lydia has medalled in her just one event these 3 Olympics, holds many "youngest" records, and is now a Hall Of Famer, gives her the edge IMO. But while golf is probably one of the largest participation sports globally, its not a race in the traditional sense, so Lisa will probably get it

Ellese Andrews has a pretty strong claim as well.

What an Olympics by all the NZ athletes, but especially the female athletes.

Smashing the Per Capita table :)

you could, but you won't win. guy in front works 30% harder due to wind resistance, guy at the back slipstreams and does very little work, comes around at the last moment using all the stored energy and win.

Indoor cycling is the best form of the sport. Power, strategy, tactics, gamesmanship you need them all to win that final lap sprint.

So now that the dust has settled and the games are over, what are our general thoughts on how the NZ team went this year?
I know there were some individual displays that were amazing, but as a team - good value for money?

Personally, I am really, really impressed, as a well-tuned armchair enthusiast. I can't claim to know anything about anything, but I think we did incredibly well and even ignoring the Per Capita table, we are so far up the table out of 200+ countries attending, that I think we should see this as one of the greatest sporting achievements in NZ's history - from a collective point of view.

Great games for NZ. Thats the highest result we have ever had and I think its been a great olympics overall despite the poor viewing times.

I stayed up till 4am on Sunday to watch Lydia Ko's final round

Final 2024 Olympic Medal Table - Official Results

Can't really argue with a best ever result. I thought the "best" gold was probably Lydia Ko's effort, to pull out the W to complete her set of medals and earn a place in the Hall Of Fame at the same time was pretty special.

I can see Lisa Carrington going around one more time in 2028. She's only 35 now, I wouldn't put it past her being able to best the rest of world again in another four years.

Felt bad for Erika Fairweather, I think everyone had reasonable hopes she would finish in the top three somewhere throughout her Olympic program. To come up short each time was disappointing. Those swimming medals always seem hardest of all to earn.

Elsewhere on the table, I'm a little surprised to see Japan get over the top of Australia for third. You don't think of Japan being a hugely sporty nation, well, I don't at least. Well done to them.

Sports I could happily never see again at the Olympics, Skateboarding and Breaking. It seems the latter is done for but that school kids on skateboards will return in 2028. Along with Flag Football, Squash, Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse and Cricket. Proposed budget of USD 6.8 Billion to fund all this frivolity.

i'm not sure, in the world champs where she won gold, the top 3-5 swimmers (olympic champions, world record holders, year's fastest swimmers in said distances) all skipped the world champs to focus on the olympics, 3rd is the best she would have done, and she came in the expected 4th in the 400 free so no surprises but no improvement either. 800m was a bit too far for her, it's just a very long sprint nowadays.

Enjoyed watching every day. As a British fan some events were disappointing - the track cycling had been a big source of joy for the last few Olympics but all the previous golds were silver and bronzes this time without the Kennys etc. But we still got the 3rd most medals overall and the same total as Tokyo but with 8 less golds. The margin between gold and silver was very small for a lot of them.

It's always been my dream to go to an Olympics. Looking at potentially going to LA as I could stay with my cousin who lives there. Having someone to stay with without the astronomical accommodation costs for an event like that makes it seem a bit more doable.
