Many folks mock and scoff at the airline safety messages and many ignore them. After all these years of jet travel this is a prime example why we have them and why one should watch them

Natural Selection at its best. If logic doesn't depict you cover both airways then I do not know if they can be trusted to read and listen.

Don't see why there couldn't be an automated recording playing when the masks drop telling you to place it over your nose and mouth?

If they were at a low altitude; i.e. below 8000ft, then the need for the oxygen mask may not have been critical. In which case could they have been advised to keep masks on over their mouths only?

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

Planes don't stay above 10,000ft very long with a decompression. The pilots are trained to drop to below 10,000 very quickly.

So yes you are probably correct that the plane was at a low altitude when that was taken, otherwise they would be turning blue very quickly!

Obviously it's impossible for crew to say anything as they're busy flying the plane and communicating with passengers comes at the bottom of their list of priorities.

I think I’d put it just over my nose - so that I could still partake of the meal service when it comes round.

They might have only been breathing through their mouths.
Is the air going to escape out their noses?
Edit: Though the mask would fit tighter if worn properly, as it will have nose shape in design.

Heard the samples from ATC recording? Talk about calm and collective. Can't have known how crazy it was out back.

Except for the fact most people are going to be in a state of panic.

Every time masks drop there always seem to be media reports of defective masks because people don't pay any attention to the other key message - the bag will not inflate.
