I followed one of the 787 CHC-AKL  flights on flightradar24, & from takeoff to touchdown, & it would have been about 1 hour five minutes except ATC had them go almost to the Hauraki Gulf coastline, so finished up a few minutes longer.

I guess the small difference in cruise speed is more than eaten up by the bus transfer at AKL.

So what happens at CHC when they use gate '22A'?   Do you go out along the airbridge then down some stairs then up more stairs to the 787? Gates 21 and 22 are usually the Jetstar gates I think.

However I suspect we will one day look back fondly on the days of 3/4 engine aircraft after the first few times dual engine aircraft have dual failures and glide into the sea half way across the pacific.

Do you point to the L-1049 Constellation, the most beautiful 3 engine aircraft in the world? wink

I am sure they have nothing to do with each other. Apart from the fact they are completely different engines from different manufacturers, the AirNZ groundings will be from the Batch C engines failing their extra inspections and being removed and sent to Singapore for rectification. As there are no spare engines to replace them with, the aircraft will just have to sit on the ground and wait until replacements become available.
The Trent problems are in the compressor, the CFM in the Southwest incident appears to have thrown a fan blade.

Looks like 787 returning to Auckland with engine problems

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

Or maybe pressurization? (According to NZ Herald - Shabby little Tabloid)
A return doesn't automatically mean a serious engine problem, particularly if they circled off Northland for a bit. Plenty of things that mean an aircraft can't continue with an ETOPS flight but is perfectly flyable.

According to this News hub article only 25% of B787s have RR engines so the majority of operators 75%  have GEs  and no problems.

Boeing said 25 percent of the Dreamliners in use have Trent 1000 engines

are our modern way of designing things with computers inferior to the olden ways of designing things without computers? things just don't seem to last very long!

As someone who used to work on older aircraft I can tell you the maintenance requirements and component life of current generation aircraft is several levels of magnitude less than the birds I worked on. Over time the planes keep getting better and more reliable. If you go back far enough it gets even worse, the engines of the ME262 for example lasted about 25 hours in the best case situation, 10 hours at worst.

There have been problems with the GE engine as well.

This is turning out badly for Air NZ but it could be a lot worse. Imagine if Air NZ only flew a fleet of B787s and nothing else, & all those aircraft had the Trent 1000 'C' engines.

It not unknown for an airline to have just one aircraft type. I think Ryan Air has over 400 Boeing 737s.

I don't think it's the method of design I believe it's the brief for design. The aircraft manufacturing industry like others is very competitive and there is a constant demand to bring prices down.
