There are so many backpacks around, but nothing that exactly matches what I want. I have found a couple that look amazing, but don't open completely, others that are perfect functionality wise, but are as ugly as hell or massive.

I'm always on the limit with this. I have a three slot laptop bag. With my personal laptop and work laptop that's 3.7KG, plus three phones, batteries for my PDA, tablet, headphones and kindle... I'd like a hard case one, mainly to protect the laptops. I've been going through the links but a heavy bag will put me over.

It was worse when the company I'm with was transferring from one entity to another. I had two work laptops!

Unless your bag looks excessively massive and won't fit in overhead I don't think I've ever been stopped for weight limits (on airNZ). With laptop and various things I've gone through with 8-10kgs carry-on, all within volume restrictions.

I have been weighed a couple of times. Have stuffed heavier items in my pockets, but they did try and charge me a couple of times and I refused. We had a couple of times we had to redistribute items between family members.

Do they pull you out of line? I mean sure, it could be down to luck but I haven't been or seen people with backpacks being pulled over for being over 7kg. I have a squarish camera backpack which fits quite a bit with electronics etc. but since I'm usually travelling with someone who won't carry much I could just give some things to them to lessen the load.

I've done a 3 week business trip with a carry on bag, a laptop and a suit roll.

Layers, layers, layers. Quick dry fabrics for frequently laundered items.

Thanks. That thing is a monster! Probably a bit big for what I want.

It is only a 34L. They do have really good compression straps and pack down really small (as in thin)

I've seen them weighing and been weighed twice. They do it in the lounge after security. Just walk around with those hand hanging scales and lift up everyone's carry on. I still wouldn't mind it enforced. I hate it when you get near your seat and there's no room overhead for a laptop bag. Honestly some people take the mickey, carry on, large purse and something else.

What do you wear? Chain mail? :-)

I try not to waste weight on the bag...so it's canvas and zippers. Maybe 1kg....probably less.

Most bags I have seen are around the 1.8 to 2KG mark.

The 32L bag I recommended from Katmandu is 920g.

Has slim laptop compartment + "boxy" larger general compartment (cable on bottom, clothes after) plus a slim back space for smaller items (power packs, small camera, bits and pieces.

There is also a small bag-zip right at the tip that nicely holds passports, phones, watch, pen, wallet - when going through security. I just stuff everything in there.....

There's a bag / slot on the side suitable for small umbrella or slim camera or water bottle.

I just saw this and I thought about this thread. Definitely not within the budget but it does look like a pretty fun thing to do within a big airport.
