https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/faa-orders-engine-fix-on-176-boeing-787s/ This is the detail about the GE engine problem. Luckily in this case they had one of older engines and one of the newer type when it happened. All fixed now of course.

A380, bit's fell off. Last time the Concorde was here, bits fell off.

the 787 is barely a year or two old!

look at how many cars are being recalled with air bag issues at the moment, or what ever other issues they have, no difference really.

But wait there's more - so at least 6 times.

Not sure if that was the last time Concorde was in NZ, I was living in Sydney when part of a Concorde fell off on the flight from Chch in 1989. Concordes arrived in Chch on charter flights once or twice more when I was in Chch in the early '90s.

I don't think it's the method of design I believe it's the brief for design. The aircraft manufacturing industry like others is very competitive and there is a constant demand to bring prices down.

These issues are nothing to do with price. They're all related to performance. Airlines will happily pay more up front if they can save money over the long term.

The 787 was sold promising pretty impressive efficiency gains over existing aircraft. Achieving those figures and designing engines to improve fuel efficiency meant the move to making things lighter and thinner which in turn is pushing our knowledge of metallurgy to the limit - with those limits quite possibly now being exceeded.

I saw a Concorde at CHC in 1999. I remember because I had just dropped my car at Craddocks car parking, and was walking over to the terminal before leaving on a holiday. I remember thinking to myself that I won't be going on that one!
