I wonder if for the good of the Party Bridges should step down, my concern with that is the alternatives are not that flash.   The Coalition appear to be silently pleased me thinks.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

JLR described himself as 'naive' concerning the law around political donations.  That is actually an area in which he has worked closely and has considerable professional expertise ...

He compared himself to Brett Kavanaugh in relation to harassment allegations.  Paula Bennett said (on AM show this morning) a conversation was had with him about inappropriate behaviour, but it was nothing along the lines of what he claims and there were no formal complaints of sexual harassment.

PB also said the NP is struggling to identify the donations JLR refers to, which he says he collected himself - on Bridges behalf.

I once had an team-member with a serious mental illness.  They would make complaints (usually on behalf of others) and allege behaviours that were plausible, but seemed unlikely.  When followed up on they all seemed to be fabrications.  They would have conversations with people and come away from those conversations having heard things that weren't said and with totally the wrong impression. They would interpret things that had nothing to do with them as personal attacks - like a monthly quote on a wall calendar.

They weren't obviously irrational, they seemed reasonable, calm and sincere the whole time ... but what they claimed to have heard and seen was in-congruent with reality.

We eventually clicked something wasn't right and got this person professional help.

I think the old adage innocent until proven guilty should apply here.

I think an investigation should get to the bottom of it, then the guilty parties should be dealt with accordingly, including SB facing charges if he did what has been alleged.

But until then, I feel all the speculation in the world isn't achieving much.

I agree but politics is not normal. In NZ even if Simon Bridges is said to be innocent a big chunk of NZ will say it is a whitewash. I don't believe Bridges can gain the Treasury benches in 2020, even before this S hit the F his polling was very low down around Andrew Little levels. The National Party may be well advised to cut their losses and get a new Leader and maybe new Leadership team and build towards 2020.

You may be right, however, his popularity is different (at least to me) from his innocence or guilt related to the charges of election fraud and what would appear to be if true, unlawful employment practice.

I feel the second is more important right now, than the first. I think it's important evidence is presented where possible as to whether these things actually occurred.

This is hardly doing to do JLR any favours credibility wise.

True - unlike the united loud screaming response by National & Co.

They're throwing everything they can at JLR, half-naked (lol - that was a non-Freudian typo - "half-baked") conspiracy theory about sexual assault, Bennett pre-empting release of "the tape" by suggesting that it's doctored, mental illness, whatever.

It's like listening to Trumpists - (Trump's innocent BTW).

Better to say little, and wait.  Actually it would have been better for Bridges to state "who cares?" and STFU when the "expenses scandal" - that wasn't - first broke.

I think more likely relieved than pleased.

None of the spectacular detonation within the National party changes the substance of any of the issues that were challenging the Coalition.   (I won't list them all again)   But this gives them a significant reprieve (particularly in the debating chamber) and will make it untenable for National to challenge them with any conviction whatsoever while Bridges remains as leader.

I was actually thinking about this a little in the past day or two. I originally agreed, but this has gotten beyond that, not because of the inquiry, but because it's clear JLR wanted more than SB was prepared to give and in my view JLR is at best unstable and didn't handle it that well.

I think who cares was the right reaction, it's startling to see him not take this approach and exceptionally poor form to use embarassing to describe the medical issues JLR had going on. Having said that, I think we would be more or less in the same place because JLR wanted this.

Paula Bennets' interview on Radio NZ this morning did nothing to help Simon Bridges or the National Party in fact it has further eroded their credibility.

Completely agree here.

Though an interesting observation as an aside - another major party leader also suffered a leak of potentially embarrassing information to the press recently.  They also ordered an inquiry to identify the leaker.   But none of the allegations or negative press that SB received on this issue occurred in this case.  In fact, that inquiry hasn't even been mentioned since it was announced.  I wonder what the reasons are for the differing treatment.
