There has been 1500 posts in this thread. Thats just us. I wonder what its like over there? Is it the talk of the town, or are they just used to dirty laundry campaigning? 

 

 

Relatives in the US are terrified and probably discussing everything in minute detail. In Canada, it's the talk of the town and there's some very worried people here. I'm one of them. I see a lot of US television news because it doesn't make sense to watch reports about this election in French, so I run US channels. I don't think people (generally) are that bothered by the he said/she said dirty tricks campaigning. That confrontational style is par for the course in the US. People are worried about what Trump its saying and how his supporters are becoming increasingly extremist in their stated opinions. Gun stores are having pre-election sales urging people to stock up in preparation for election day. If there's no violence and no deaths on election day I'll be happy, but surprised. Trump supporters are using words like "overthrow" and "revolution" - the kinds of noises that came ahead of the Arab Spring. Could the US have its own watershed? It's possible but, geez, I hope not. 

 

 

 

 

Cant see disgruntled trump voters taking up arms. Americans seem to patriotic

 

I always thought it is funny that the pro gun lobby realistically think that having guns will stop the federal government.

 

You know the one with tanks and drones, the NSA...

Take any speech, that may or may not include jokes, extract a snippet then spin it. Seems to me that Wikileaks likes taking things out of context and turning it into a conspiracy. (I'm not a fan of Clinton by any means & consider her dangerous, but Wikileaks has forgotten it was supposed to be about bringing truth to light).

Looking at the Putins, Robert Mugabe, Bashar al-Assad, Kim Jong-un, Rodrigo Duterte, Nursultan Nazarbayev - ultimate power, no independent media or judiciary.

 

Then we have Clinton who is limited by the senate, congress, supreme court and the media.

Thats it. How can you govern a country when you can't? Here, we vote in a Govt. They have a mandate, they have a majority, they can do what they like, and fair enough, they were voted in. A Democratic Govt and a Republican Senate, its stupid. Its not democratic and its not a Govt. And they rant about the Constitution? Clearly it doesnt work.

Need to remember that Wikileaks is making public, stolen information....kinda low and dirty imo....I hope the law catches up with Assange and his sad friends who make a life from this sort of despicable behavior.

Trump news this morning. Now threatening in black and white to sue all the women who accuse him, and saying when President he will break up NBC because they reported on the accusations.

No doubt there are many more women potentially to come forward.

It looks like Trump is threatening in an attempt to stop that. As for closing media outlets hopefully he will never get that chance.

Relative to that list - of course not.

 

Able to lead the US through a time where there's some clearly growing serious divisions, to unify it?  I have doubts.  She is quite conservative (as was Bill) for a Democrat. Playing the long game (ambition for 2 terms) then she's going to need to show she's "tough", as for every incident that happens  - she's going to be screamed at by the ugly side, claiming proof that she was unfit.

 

I'd wager she'll be more trigger-happy than Obama with foreign policy.  She's also clearly not going to be able to "get on" with Putin - as Trump would have.  OTOH the Trumputin portmanteau world leadership team would of course inflict untold misery on much of the planet, including us with collateral economic damage I expect.

Of the many, many, many important things Assange and Wikileaks have brought into the light, one that still stands out in my memory is the 'collateral damage' video of Americans murdering innocent civilians from a helicopter gunship and joking about it. The US authorities certainly would have preferred to keep that one secret, and without Wikileaks they would have succeeded. They would no doubt be pleased, though, that you have bought into their expensive, ongoing propaganda campaign to blacken Wikileaks and Assange. I have no doubt that both have made mistakes, and done things they shouldn't have, but that doesn't detract from the importance of exposing abuses of power as they have done.

And now Assange appears to be on an entirely personal vendetta to get back at those who've made life very difficult for him - something he should have expected as inevitable.

 


Wikileaks has lost all credibility to me as having some role as moral guardians.  Even if you believe that it's fine to release state secrets and hacked private data, "taking sides" by selective release to suit your own agenda makes him as bad as the other evil b*stards.  Assange has power - and he seems to be abusing it.

There may be some truth to that, especially the selective releasing, but how much real power can he have in his current situation? I think he has been demonised by his enemies, and he certainly hasn't been fairly treated. If he is on a personal vendetta, he has a reason for it. How sane would you be after four years in a room with the world out to get you?

 

I think bad behaviour always needs to be identified and condemned, regardless of where it comes from, but I also think Assange and Wikileaks have done a lot of good, and that deserves to be recognised.

They steal Countries secrets and only reveal the parts they want to???

 

I suspect Russia has a lot to do with it all.

I'm as unimpressed with the "official" line as I am with Wikileaks. Actually, no, I am less impressed with Wikileaks but only because I feel foolish. I was such a strong supporter but now don't trust anything he (not sure there is a "they" any more) releases. Wl lost me when they started releasing snippets out of context and sealed my poor opinion of "them" when personal information unrelated to state players was released without regard to the consequences. Now, they are throwing out Chelsea Clinton's emails from her days at university along with the very personal medical history of members of the Clinton family. There is NO public right to know this, nor should there be a public interest in it. 

 

I used to host and distribute files. I used to believe that what they were doing was noble and necessary. Now, it's vindictive, questionable, and tainted. Makes me feel dirty.

He won't do either. He can't risk suing anyone. The moment he does it unleashes discovery and every single thing he has ever done in the company of any female becomes something that can be investigated. Women that haven't come forward now would be protected from law suits by being called as witnesses. If Trump has one iota of dirty anything in his closet he can't risk taking legal action. Even the claims made during his divorce would be up for exposure. Nope, his legal team aren't stupid. He won't sue.

I wasn't aware of that. I have to say I agree with you. I would also be interested to read any other informed comment on this. It does make me wonder what is going on.
