Maybe they are going to build them out of straw. Worked out well for 1 of the 3 pigs.

So, today it is announced that NZ has a record deficit even worse than 2005. Is this the 'glorious' end to the 'Rockstar Economy' that Joyce, English, and Key were bragging about. Perhaps National is now thinking that a Labour led Government for the next 3 years might be quite a good thing.... By the time the crunch really comes Jacinda will get the blame.

It's hard to criticise or praise anything this government has done. There is at this stage a general lack of done.

Many balls are still in the air. Several look like they will be tricky to to catch, hence some serious repositioning of headline targets like houses and trees. Joens reduced the tree target from 1B to 500m when intevriewed on The Nation. And they are no longer govt targets but NZ Inc targets. House built and trees planted by the private sector will be counted as govt delivering their promises.

On the trees I understand the govt is having significant issues finding land to plant them on and has re-tasked a bunch of officials from their regular work to find land (preferably by leasing it).

The new trees will be used to build some of the houses - Jones (on The Nation) and Twyford (on The AM Show) have both said so.

...they're also having significant issues finding 100,000 buyers who can afford the "affordable" Kiwibuild homes - even if they manage to build them.

At least half of Kiwibuild houses will be in Auckland, and they will be built down to a maximum price of 600k. According to a NewsHub story about an MBIE Report, even if the homes are prices at 500k, you'll need a combined household income of $114k to be able to afford one... and there are only about 25,000 people privately renting who have that income level.

It would help if you were a little more specific. The report is about a "Trade Deficit" (ie. that we're importing more than we're exporting)

Not a fiscal deficit (ie. that the government spending more than its earning)

There's quite a large difference between the two.

The understatement of the year goes to....

What people fail to recognise, is that all the policies being announced by Labour this term are being paid for from the financial stewardship of National. Without Nationals "single minded view" of getting back to surplus (which I understand some thought should have been less important than social spending) Labour would have no money in the kitty.

This is the article about the Trade Deficit. I should have made that clearer, however it looks quite bad. As far as I know Air NZ has not taken delivery of about 6 Boeing 787s in that period! Lol.

I'm not sure why labour was opposed to TPP when they were in opposition. Or maybe they didn't care about trade deficits back then.

But just today, Climate Change Minister James Shaw took a shot at National over climate change, saying "I hope that now that he's leader of the National Party, that he takes the opportunity to redefine where the party stands on climate change and the environment."

This coming from the Greens who let the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary be a negotiating item so they could take power. On the plus side, they got a weed referendum, which is MUCH more important.

I thought Bridges comment yesterday about Greens sticking to Greens Policy instead of Social, was a valid one.

Interesting to see migration is climbing to over 70,000/annum when they promised to slash net migration to about 20-30k . Such a BS government.

I don't think the legislation has passed on that. I am not certain the timeline. If it's still that high next year, someone ought to be asking some tough questions.

To be fair these numbers are likely reflective of Nationals policy rather than Labours given Labour only took office in November. Again if it's still bad in 6 months it would be all their fault.

The problem is that you can't realistically turn off migration like a tap.

If NZ inc needs a specialist IT network SAP Banana coder and there are none in NZ not already employed etc then it might take 10 years to get another Kiwi with the right skills and experience. Ergo, you fetch one from somewhere else. I know someone who was in the running for CDO of Air New Zealand. He's British. He declined the role in the end because of family reasons and now works in Helsinki in a similar role. The CDO they appointed came from Israel.

Labour do have a tendency to fixate on the small beer stuff when it comes to work which is odd given that people earning less than $60k are more or less not paying any income tax etc - you would think they would want more people in the upper end of the income bracket to fund their plans...

The issue is that trees take quite a few years to grow to harvest.

I thought anyone could apply to buy a Kiwibuild home? Twyford was on TV at some stage talking about a ballot system.
