Jacinda Ardern to stand down no later than 7th Feb.
Election to be 14th October.
On my birthday too! When is the official campaigning allowed to commence? Usually not that long beforehand IIRC?

She can spin it however she likes but the poll results over the last 6 months have got to have had quite a bit of influence on her decision. Probably not a bad move because I think she does carry a lot of baggage around the failed policies, even if it was mainly the faulty of various incompetent MP's and not herself.
Two things:
1) Potential ill health or second pregnancy? If either it is hopefully the latter, can't say I blame her in that regard.
2) In the event it is not that, then I legitimately fear what sort of year we are in for economy-wise next year.
Good luck to National - the news say they're just at the start of a reshuffle:

Yes, she may have seen just how bad things are going to get economy wise and decided she just didn't want to deal with all the fallout over that.

A look at whether she would stand down before the end of her term:
As I posted back here in March/April labour chance for winning in 2023 is getting smaller by the day. By the middle of next year we will be well into a recession and the cost of living crises will be even worse than it is currently.
Does Jacinda want to tarnish her career by losing her final election or does she jump before it gets that bad. She’s left it to late to go out on top like JK did but she could still go before Labour bombs into the 20’s.
Guess we will know before Xmas, but either way it’s funny all this talk and news stories all drop in the MSM on the same day.
So all the media reports back in October were spot on regardless of almost everyone on here stating that she wouldn't resign..... Labour couldn't win this year with her as leader.

Grant Robertson not standing for leader either. Who's left?
Hipkins I guess.
Quitting and running away rather than risk losing an election. Didn't see her as a quitter but guess she'll be off to a cushy overseas posting somewhere.

Hipkins would be strong competition, regardless of Labour's well publicized failures he always comes across as competent.
It's hard to know if this is at least partially indicative of what she feels the chances are that Labour will lose this election and how her personal ratings would be affected by being in charge if they get rolled. She is unlikely to want leader when her party was ousted (even though I still don't consider that even close to a given), in future job postings she may target. One wonders if she may have already sounded out a UN role supported by Helen Clark.
She has not had an easy tenure as PM, overseeing a number of significantly challenging events, but equally, her and Labours continued trend of over promising and underdelivering is largely on her.
I expect resigning now will ensure she is viewed in a more positive light than she probably deserves under the circumstances.
She certainly wasn't our worst PM, but equally due to the over promise under deliver, shouldn't be considered amongst our best either. I'd probably give her a 6/10
I think that with everything that's coming this year - global recession getting worse, pandemic continuing and her popularity waning, she's basically chucking her replacement under the bus, so she comes out looking "good".

His handling of the Northland Covid situation wasn't great. Other than that, he's been pretty OK. I can't see him as leader yet.
Robertson would probably be the 'safest' choice, but I can't see him winning an election.
