Ministry of Health has advised Medical practices they must contact >65's and encourage them to get the Flu Vaccine, and must provide them free of charge, but is NOT going to provide those practices with additional funds for the nurses and administrators time for doing this.

So Labour is going to be seen by the average punter to have generously provided this for the betterment of the elders, without realizing, Labour has put the bulk of the cost onto the practices they get that treatment from.

Sounds reasonable.

There is more of these types of moves in the pipeline too. I'll share those as they are made public.

Secondly, last week JA was asked in an interview what she thought of Landlords putting rents up by $50 a week to match the $50 a week JA decided students needed.

JA's response: "Landlords should consider the morality of their decisions"

Is she kidding? I know she isn't, but seriously!?

Another two examples she has no idea how the real world actually works.

Perhaps if SOME of Labours caucus weren't all academics and career politicians they wouldn't keep handing out candy without considering the costs for real.

Your flu example is similar to governments never giving due allowance for all the free work businesses do for them in the administration and collection of, say, GST. If you add up the staff and accountancy time that costs NZ Inc each year, I imagine it is not a trivial sum.

Morality????
Seriously? Does she even know what that word means? I thought the labour party didn't believe in morals?

The only job she has ever had is politics. She has no idea. Malcolm Turnbull must be laughing at what she is going to demand in Australia today. She is so insignificant.

There ya go, I fixed that for you. It's not her specifically. We just have very little bargaining power.

Bottom line is, Australia doesn't really need anything from us, we need stuff from Australia.

I think that she thinks if she appeals to peoples "morality" it will have enough power to erase the benefit of $50 a week in rentals. I think she might be greatly overestimating herself.

If she had simply THOUGHT about the policy instead of just announcing it, she may have found a more intelligent way to provide that $50 of value other than with disposable cash.

This is at the crux of my issues with the Labour Party and it's policies. They had *9* years to polish these ideas. A moderately intelligent person could have seen this coming a mile off, and if JA thinks she can appeal to peoples "sense of decency" as she perceives the issue to be, then she is more in LA LA Land than you might have thought.

That was Nationals stance on the situation....also to be the bigger Country morality wise.

Heh, can't agree with that. It's each citizens duty to pay it's tax. I consider processing and paying my taxes as part of the obligations and benefits I get from running a business.

From a personal or business perspective, there's still an opportunity cost though.

Yeah, but it's a stretch to compare the two. What is the alternative? Government sends people into your business each month, to assess your tax requirements and take your payment? Would you prefer this? I wouldn't.

Their obligation from my perspective is to make the process as painless as it can be. I find there is very little additional compliance time over and above what I'd already be doing to understand the financial performance of my business which I need to be effective any way.

My accounting system spits out the numbers for me.

Your flu injection is one small part of a GP's job and shouldnt be held in isolation. I know of very few poor Doctors, although they mostly all work hard. If as you say your wife is poor and making no money, why doesnt she find a job that does? The practice I visit has 5 female doctors, 3 female nurses and 2 receptionists. They take their first patient at 8.30am and last at 4.45pm. They only seldom do house calls and this costs a lot.

A lot of over 65's or people with respiratory conditions get their flu jabs at the same time of a doctors visit. I do, and this is completed by a nurse either prior to me seeing the Doctor or just after and takes a few minutes max.

If Doctors are so poorly paid, teachers so poorly paid and god knows who else, I feel guilty for voting National so many times.

For every treatment is it not just the time taken from a doctors (or nurses) time for the actual procedure, there are notes, reviews everything else that goes with it.

Shingles is a complicated disease which can be time consuming to treat. (I corrected my earlier post to reflect the fact that MOH wants doctors to give free singles treatments to 65-80's)

To give you some counter perspective. My wife starts at 9am, she often doesn't have time for either of her 2 mandated breaks, and eats lunch in the 15 minutes between patients, whilst she writes notes. Her last patient is usually seen at between 5:30 and 6pm after which she will write notes. The doors at her practice close at 6:30pm, so she comes home and finishes her notes for the patients she sees at home "in her own time" and often will be lucky if she doesn't spend another 2 hours on top of her "work hours".

I have NEVER claimed my wife makes no money. I have claimed that the Government is putting massive extra pressure on doctors by increasing their workloads, in some cases very significantly, whilst not increasing pay by any meaningful amount.

I am not sure your situation, but if your employer asked you to work an 20-30%, and didn't compensate you, would you be fine with that? I seriously doubt it.

This isn't about my wife, this is about all medical practices who are all stretched for resources, being asked to stretch even further, whilst not compromising your care.

You seem to have a bit of an axe to grind about that doctors dare complain if they are well paid. That is short-sighted.

Not even sure why you are talking about National, these new policies and demands are Labours.

To pay it, yes. To work as an unofficial tax collector and accountant for the government, not so much.

Don't doctors get paid many many thousands of dollars over the course of a year from the State?

I am a National supporter but am totally lost as to why we should feel sorry for one of the highest paid groups of professionals in NZ?

Wow, what a disgraceful attitude. Either you believe people should be paid fairly for the work they do, or you don't. Doctors might be well paid by your standards, but they are supremely qualified exceptionally hard-working professionals.

Fair and reasonable treatment shouldn't just apply to the poor and average earners.

Profession or industry aside, that the government would lump an extra burden or cost on a business or industry to reduce costs for the government, and give no extra compensation in respect of the extra cost the business has incurred is unreasonable, yet somewhat expected from this government's ham-handed policy setting skills.
