Heh, can't agree with that. It's each citizens duty to pay it's tax. I consider processing and paying my taxes as part of the obligations and benefits I get from running a business.

From a personal or business perspective, there's still an opportunity cost though.

Yeah, but it's a stretch to compare the two. What is the alternative? Government sends people into your business each month, to assess your tax requirements and take your payment? Would you prefer this? I wouldn't.

Their obligation from my perspective is to make the process as painless as it can be. I find there is very little additional compliance time over and above what I'd already be doing to understand the financial performance of my business which I need to be effective any way.

My accounting system spits out the numbers for me.

The alternative is that the government recognise the fact that you are working for them and actually pay you somehow. For example, giving every company that files GST a $1000 GST credit each year. Not all companies are small enough for the owner to do it all like you do - some end up with multiple members of staff working on multiple sites etc etc and incur much greater costs.

I may have to praise a government policy soon - although I am not sure if this is another one that began under National. I do seem to recall reading about it a while ago.

I saw in the Herald that they may FINALLY dump those profoundly annoying departure cards at airports. Hurrah! How much paper will that save, for a start...?

Yep, that would be a very good move. If that gets through then her trip to Aussie was definitely worthwhile.

Your flu example is similar to governments never giving due allowance for all the free work businesses do for them in the administration and collection of, say, GST. If you add up the staff and accountancy time that costs NZ Inc each year, I imagine it is not a trivial sum.

If you're doing it in-house you get a deduction for the wages of the people doing it.

If it's prepared externally then you can claim the costs like any other business expense.

What more would you like?

I'd suggest it was a crapshoot - years of moaning about Australian immigration and deportation policies and then she goes over and shrugs her shoulder and says "...but it's their country, their rules" - exactly what Labour insisted the Nats somehow change from NZ.

Ideally the government to actually pay the wages. They pay their employees to do work for them.

To be paid for filling in the census form?

You want the Government to pay you for the basic costs of operating a business?

This thread has got totally unreal. Maybe we should get our employers to pay us to get to work and the costs incurred. Maybe they should throw in lunch for free if you cannot get home and back in time?

Hmm...what else could the government pay us to do....?

Get real and back on topic maybe?

Lol. The basic principle of tax is payment to a central body to provide the infrastructure etc., for an economy, which incidentally allows us to continue in business. Alternatively the government could pay us for the administrative costs involved in tax affairs, which would mean they need to collect more tax than previously, which means we are essentially paying for the administrative costs of taxation, which is what we were trying to avoid in the first place...

Oh Joy, the front page of nzherald is a story about how they had trouble conceiving. I couldn't care less! (I didn't read it) I feel for those who have trouble or can't have babies. It's truly heartbreaking. However, if she wants people to not take her personal life into account as a politician (ie is she fit for PM whilst pregnant or should she take time off work etc) then she shouldn't be giving stories to the media about how hard having a baby is. I just want someone fit for the job. I didn't care what John Key did in his spare time, nor English, nor Clark. Is it relevant to her position?

There are sites around that try harder for news and less hard for 'life and style'.

Don't go to that site and act surprised. You wouldnt pick up a womans weekly if you want your sports section !!

In my opinion, they could not have picked a worse man in NZ for heading the tax review.
