Love the idiot's 'logic' around the need to wear a mask. Being tested negative earlier somehow makes him immune to infection now! Wow, just wow.

Imagine being a citizen in a country run by logic like that. I am sorry for America, but their system, and the number of supremely ignorant voters, saw him elected and it could happen again.

The situation in America is truly incredible. Unbelievable. Implausible. Improbable.

Prior to 2016, I tended to think that Americans were, on average, reasonable people. OK, many Yanks seemed to be loud, showy, self-important and smugly self-satisified with the superiority of their culture compared to all others. And sure, they'd had racial problems over the years, but it seemed that the issue was slowly being addressed, with Obama's election an indicator of real progress in that direction.

However, the events of the last four years have revealed - IMHO - that the average American is just as lazy, ignorant and bigoted as their current 'leader'.

IF America voters manage to dump Trump in November and IF they manage to remove him from the White House without civil war, I might revise my opinion, but the way things are going, those eventualities are becoming increasingly unlikely.

Incredible.

Back to the future ...

The Irish Times  - Trump is a symptom of the disease

Wed, May 25, 2016

... Many seem to think that things could not get worse. Oh yes, they could. Things could get far worse, not just in the US, but across the world. This is why Mr Trump is so dangerous: he has no notion of the foundations of US success.

Mr Trump is a rightwing populist. Populists despise institutions and reject expertise. They offer, instead, charisma and ignorance. Rightwing populists also blame foreigners. Mr Trump adds to all this a zero-sum view of “the deal”. ...

The above link still works. This op-ed is still relevant 4 years later.  Read it.

Covid-19 coronavirus: Heartbreaking front page in New York Times as US reaches grim milestone

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=12334313

I had to highlight this bit of the article for those that don't want to read it in its entirety:

US President Donald Trump has played golf for the first time since he declared the coronavirus pandemic a national emergency more than two months ago, leading to the shutdown of much of American society.

His return to the course on Saturday was the latest sign that he wants the country back to pre-outbreak times, even as the US death toll from the virus nears 100,000, twice what he once predicted it would be.

But the president has been accused of hypocrisy after a handful of tweets from 2014 resurfaced.

Trump levied frequent criticism of Barack Obama's regular golf outings when he was president.

"Can you believe that with all of the problems and difficulties facing the US, President Obama spent the day playing golf. Worse than Carter," Trump tweeted in October 2014 during the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

He just does not get it; Once a Tweet always a Tweet. They never go away. Just like science it never goes away.❗️

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Rolling Stone - Trump Golfs While More Americans Die

23 May 2020

While the U.S. pandemic death toll approaches 100,000, the president left the White House for one of his personal golf courses ...

Trump going golfing is consistent with his reopen theme that he’s been pushing of late, but it still shows a tone-deafness and a lack of empathy.

The U.S. pandemic death toll is approaching 100,000, and on top of that it’s Memorial Day weekend, a solemn occasion meant for tributes to Americans lost at war. ...

FAUCI URGES TRUMP TO REMAIN ON GOLF COURSE UNTIL PANDEMIC IS OVER

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Sharply disagreeing with critics of Donald J. Trump’s weekend visit to the Trump National Golf Club, Dr. Anthony Fauci has urged Trump to remain on the golf course until the pandemic is over.

“The people who are giving you a hard time about your golf trip are just haters,” Fauci told Trump on Sunday. “It’s in the best interest of everyone in the country that you keep golfing, Mr. President.”

“Please,” he added.

Trump was reportedly surprised by the doctor’s words of encouragement, especially because the golf trip had limited the President’s ability to communicate with Fauci, the Centers for Disease Control, and other scientists involved in the coronavirus response.

“It’s been tough without you, but we are doing the best we can,” Fauci said. “After all your hard work, you deserve months and months and months of golfing.”

Fauci also recommended that Trump throw away his phone, stop talking to the press, and not tell anyone about the great idea he had on the golf course about using lawn fertilizer to protect people from the coronavirus.

This take is fairly lazy bigoted and ignorant.

It's a big country, there are plenty of idiots. There are lots of idiots in NZ as well. That doesn't make the average New Zealander lazy bigoted or ignorant, ths means that there are idiots in NZ.

An argument could certainly be made that America has more than its fair share, especially in the bigoted and ignorant department.

While it's hard to beat the Florida man, which takes Americans to their ultimate de-evolution, Australia man definitely give some competition.
