The President of the Heritage Foundation famously said two things:

  • "We're in the midst of the second American revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be"
  • "We have plans in motion to win, and they cannot be stopped"

Make no mistake, there was a lot of malarkey going on in this election. Did it stoop to outright fraud? Unlikely. But the rules were definitely rigged in their favour.

Paul1977: He didn’t end the world during his last presidency, and he (probably) won’t this time.

Because he spent most of it tied up with Covid, and neither Ukraine nor Gaza happened with him around.  In addition this time round his henchpeople know where the pressure points are and will seek to remove them as quickly as possible so they can do whatever they want.

Also, if this turns out the way it's looking at the moment, it looks like Allan Lichtman got it wrong (for only the second time):

Paul1977:

I think it would be a miracle for Harris to win at this point. Looks like there’s a good chance Trump will even win the popular vote; when was the last time a Republican managed that?

He didn’t end the world during his last presidency, and he (probably) won’t this time.

I really don’t see him trying to create a dictorship, or any other means to maintain power beyond his new term. He only ran again because of his bruised ego, and the two term limit means he can leave office in January 2029 with his ego intact. He’ll give zero shits whether he’s succeeded by a Republican or a Democrat.

He's backed by powerful organisations who have an agenda to essentially destroy the administrative state. The Heritage Foundation. The Federalist Society. They have a 180-day plan to essentially make Trump God-Emperor by dismantling federal agencies, firing millions of public servants and replacing them with vetted MAGA loyalists, and utterly obliterating civil rights, which the nation spent centuries to secure. It's 900 pages and you can read it right here. And make no mistake, Trump was involved with this abomination.

I'm not sure, I maintain that the Dems had 4 years but they chose to field Biden and then just gave it to Harris. Harris prior to that had never been elected - she was dropped very early on the in the presidential race in 2020 and then this was just given to her. That's a lot to ask of voters to just vote for her as their president.

Yebbut... the alternative is a multiple bankrupt, convicted criminal, fraud and adjudicated rapist who hung out with pedophiles. JFC how is the vote anything other than 0% Trump, 100% Rock with Googly Eyes?

I see you didn't read that article about Fascism that was linked a couple of days ago in either this or the other Trump thread.

I know, just wish that things had gone differently.

A few people I know on social media are loud (and obvious) Trump supporters, and the gloating and gleefulness is making me depressed. One even said that the result was good for the world (somehow).

at the moment the popular vote would suggest they don't share those views

a number of the western world have voted for right leaning governments so i'm not surprised

It looks like he might win that one too, which is quite surprising.

Was Kamala really that bad, compared to, say, Hillary?

That's not quite accurate. The coronavirus pandemic only came along in the last year of his term. I think had that not happened, he would have been on track to win another term as the economy was doing quite well. His bungling (and slow) response to the pandemic is what I will always think shot him in the foot in 2020.

Ukraine had already started (2014, from memory) but not much was going on in that area in 2020 - (definitely) not like today, but I'll grant you that yes, the war in Gaza hadn't happened back then.

I don’t know that I read those pieces specifically, but I find many of those things overly alarmist and one-sided. Very much how right-wing thinkpieces are overly alarmist about the “woke far left”.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Even Todd Muller doesn't see much positive in his win:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/us-election-nz-reacts-to-trumps-lead-in-election-nzd-hit-potential-tariffs/EZHXTX2MQVFJTJ4ACY47V3QO6Y/

Muller, a keen follower of US politics, says Trump’s “character is lacking” and he can’t see the Republican presidential candidate being able to unify a nation where “two tribes were at war”.
