ezbee:

In the end

The poll is the poll, and its fair enough to conclude the Government has done many things that increase costs, lower levels of service and concern people.
Healthcare in particular.

Its not that there were complaints, is it just the usual from each side.
These days with social media its even easier to brigade on an issue.

I expect TVNZ has had orders of magnitude greater complaints on scheduling of Coronation Street over the years.

Winston Peters has also fired up his supporters to believe its RNZ and TVNZ fault that Winston can't control himself in manner of John Key or even Luxon, and flys off the handle.
ACT also can't accept that maybe there is a reason they poll lower than National.
Must be the media.

Antivax and such are looking for their revenge on media reporting facts on vaccination and such.
There are those that would not be happy unless TVNZ was like Whale Oil of old, or a NZ version of Truth Social.

If we've ever wondered what a nation run by conspiracy theorists looks like, Putin's Russia is a good example. It's no coincidence that the cookers mentioned by Ezbee would dearly want a Dear Leader like Putin to "make the trains run on time". Though it's not all it's cracked up to be...

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Bluntj:

It was the way it was reported that was the apparent issue. Mikey was quite emotional.

Maiki. And she's a new-ish political editor. I'd expect she's still finding her groove.

I find this a bit bewildering

https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/350263451/have-public-service-cuts-hit-front-line

Front Line and Back Office are very clear. But the Ministers suggest its not clear and its blurry.

Whether its a Call Centre, child abuse/safety staff, DOC staff, its patently obvious who interacts with people directly, and those that don't. Second issue is when Back Office is reduced, does Front Line pick up the tab with that? Unless Back Office sat round with nothing to do, then someone has to do it.

Agree, a more useful distinction is operational and support - and it looks like there's some carve-outs in headcount happening that are definitely operational.

I'd be interested if the much vexed Comms staffers have been trimmed or whether a lot of that already happened with Robertson pre-election.

There's always roles which are operational who get caught in these sorts of reductions in headcount. Equally there will be roles that should probably go that won't.

It sounds easy to classify roles but in reality it's not.

That's why the ministers are going through the budgets line by line. Line. By. Line.

The only thing they do "line by line" is the spin they are told to say.

An interesting piece from Bryce Edwards about the PM and MP's recent pay increases. I always thought the Remuneration Authority was 100% independent of any government; I had no idea it was also run by politicians.

Yep - also good game Luxon. Payrise "but I'll donate it to charity" which means he'll get back the donation tax credit via IRD then next term doesn't need to bother donating so $50k payrise. All while people, even like myself are fighting potentially being made redundant and likely not getting any payrise this year despite cost of living and my mortgages going up significantly over the last year.

On another note: https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/350266552/national-raised-103-million-months-leading-election

National: https://elections.nz/assets/Annual-Returns/2023/National-Party-Annual-Return-2023.pdf
Act: https://elections.nz/assets/Annual-Returns/2023/ACT-Annual-Return-2023.pdf
NZ First: https://elections.nz/assets/Annual-Returns/2023/NZ-First-Annual-Return-2023.pdf

It's amazing how many property investors have backed National and the general range of people who have backed ACT and NZ First.

This is why the pay freezes of 2017-today were a bad idea. They haven't had a payrise while the rest of country has had large pay rises and now when they get one a fair chunk of the country doesn't.

Performative theatre around pay rises is just that, it's pretty stupid.

I'm not sure the "rest of the country" had large pay rises in the last five years.

Median weekly earning in 2017 was $960. In 2023 median weekly earnings was $1273. Inflation means the spending power of those increases has been eroded but the increases are there.

Data.

We'll be lucky to have any stats shortly if most of the staff take the offer.

Stats NZ staff offered voluntary redundancies

A PSA spokesperson confirmed the union understood all Stats NZ staff were receiving the offer.
