Yes, Kiwibuild was a fairy tale, its now gone, lesson learned

Sorry, but this was a major policy platform and it was also a key attack platform to attack the National Party for "doing nothing" (which was untrue) about house prices when they were in opposition.

I can't write this off so easily. We have a consumer watchdog to prosecute retailers who engage in bait-and-switch tactics. I do not understand why this should suddenly be acceptable for parties seeking election.

Feel free for it to be part of the campaign, off course it will be. Will it be the key point to discuss consistently from here on for years? Probably. Im not sure what National did about house prices as there wasnt a housing crisis, Bill English, 3rd leaders debate. Was Kiwibuild not a failed attempt to add affordable housing but it was actually a bait and switch plan instead?

There were already affordable housing mechanisms and ballots in place and they had been going for years, but it didn't stop people constantly repeating the lie that National "wasn't doing anything".

I entered several of those ballots but missed out. And then when Labour was elected, I could at least live with the idea I might be able to buy an affordable house.

Instead, I waited and waited and nothing happened. No one resigned, no one got held to account for it. Just nothing. In the end, I had to give up and bought on the market. Couldn't put my life on hold any longer for something that didn't really exist and wasn't going to.

I object to the assertion that anyone who doesn’t support the current group of professional protestors, lifelong politicians, SJWs, ex-unionists and eco-warriors must be “rabid National fans ....... unbearable to anyone with a semi-decent set of morals.”

That's nice. I'm not sure what you are objecting to given no one has written what you wrote.

Twyford was the ‘Minister for Blaming’ when the current government was appointed by Winston Peters. At least now it’s not going to be “because of the previous government’s mess” it will be “but covid19......”

A bit like "It's the previous governments fault" or "it's because of the GFC" or "it's because of the earthquake"

All governments play the same game, the Key government more than most. They were still blaming the Clark government in their third term.

This is a fairly damning account of Mullers first week. Being compared to Cunliffe, Shearer and Goff probably isn't what he was looking for. If the National paty doesn't get it's caucus under control it's going to be a long long few years for them. It'll be fairly entertaining, as political infighting always reveals the worst in politicians characters, but probably as bad for the country as a weak opposition was under the Clark and Key governments.

Hugely frustrating as there are many things that Labour could have been held to account for by an effective opposition, but instead we have this sideshow.

Were it not for the filters, I probably would have gone for something a tad more colourful but not too far removed from 'sideshow'.

It shouldn’t just be about the leader though.

I don’t think I can ever vote for National again unless their underlying fundamental beliefs on the way the country/economy should run change. I just don’t believe they are in the best interest of the country as a whole.

To me in simplistic terms, isn’t America an example of what some of these mainstay National policies would look like in the economy & how damaging they can be?

Things like low taxes & instead user pays for everything.

Low wage economy with no worker rights.

Hands off free market.

All parties have some fundamental ideas of how the country should run or some backers behind the scenes pulling strings. To me this makes a bigger difference than who the leader is & it's disappointing that this appears hidden & not talked about much.

I'd say it's more an example of What NZ First policies would be, given their predilection towards pork-barrel seat-buying spending and demonising immigrants.

The US political system is so corrupt and broken that a large chunk of National MPs would probably be too left for the Democrats. I don't these sorts of comparisons really prove anything.

That's why I only used the 3 basic prominent examples of National policies. The less tax is always a big one for National, but this has to lead to user pays for health & education for starters like America

Nothing is like America, you can't fairly compare them to anyone

We have a 'user pays' health system like America? News to me.

I guess it's like all those "Nats planning to sell ACC!" panic headlines from the early 2010s that never happened and now no one wants to talk about how hopelessly wrong they were.

Well I did say simplistic :)

Ok, so what would the National party end game look like for NZ then?

I know this is a huge question, but when we vote for a party surely we should take a guess as to what the country will look like under them & decide if we want that, not just vote for a nice leader.

Wait for the policies by all parties to be announced as a first step

I didn't say we have user pays yet, although for a lot of people they do end up having to go private.

I'm talking long term beliefs of where a party believes we should be. Surely lower taxes & underfunding of health leads to people requiring medical insurance as per America e.g. what I mean by user pays.

What is the point of policy announcements? They never get implemented.
