Then they came for the Statisticians

Of course you cut Mathematics and IT departments.

Education Minister Erica Standford says reading recovery programs are ending because new teaching methods being introduced means reading recovery programs are not needed:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/05/stanford-confirms-end-of-reading-recovery-programme-in-schools-doesn-t-rule-out-job-losses.html

This is concerning. No matter what teaching method is used you're going to get some kids that need something extra from time to time.

I guess you read the bit of the article that said there would be intervention for kids who aren’t achieving? It’s reading recovery by another name.

We will be getting rid of reading recovery, using that same funding and putting that into what we call tier two and three interventions which are small group and one-on-one for the very few kids who fall through the cracks," she told AM.

Yes got it thanks for posting I was momentarily fooled by the headline. "Erica Stanford confirms end of reading recovery programme in schools, doesn't rule out job losses"

"We will be getting rid of reading recovery, using that same funding and putting that into what we call tier two and three interventions which are small group and one-on-one for the very few kids who fall through the cracks," she told AM.

sounds good to me, I really don't want to see a gap or otherwise while they change over.

I'm not sure the "rest of the country" had large pay rises in the last five years.

I reckon, I don't remember getting a pay bump at Luxon's new level at anytime over the last 5 years - I must have missed that meeting!

So you are earning the same today as you were in 2017?

Steve is back with his Secret Diary, and this week he takes a rather humourous look at Luxon and his poor polling results in the week that was (not paywalled anymore either!).

HelloThere:

We'll be lucky to have any stats shortly if most of the staff take the offer.

Stats NZ staff offered voluntary redundancies

A PSA spokesperson confirmed the union understood all Stats NZ staff were receiving the offer.

Statistics NZ has grown from 960 people in Q218 to a (census) peak of 1,700 people in Q322.  It now stands at 1,491 people (q423).  Thats phenomenal growth given little improvement or innovation in product coupled with the poor collection and analysis in the Census (despite the millions of $$$ increase to undertake).

The great and wonderful "deferred maintenance" is one of those , we have a building that has suffered that and it is now too expensive to bring up to MPI compliance so it will be abandoned.
