mudguard:

The thing is, what metric do you base performance on? GDP? Immigration? I work in finance and a big part of it is reliant on the rural sector, but also in the leisure sector. I can tell you one thing, the leisure side absolutely exploded during the pandemic, the complete opposite of our normal convention was that when things get tight, the toys stop being bought.

We might see that now, but the stuff we deal with is so backlogged that there isn't the financial risk as there's no stock.

And I certainly see a few echo chambers, from many who I interact with and assuming the rural community they're involved with, one might infer many farmers are pro National. And that's fine. But would adding all the farmers up nationwide equal a small town? So for all the noise one bloc might make, a single town voting the other way rules them out.

That's where I get frustrated, friends who earn very good money thinking that it's the norm, and if you're earning over $60k it probably looks pretty good to someone in South Auckland/Dunedin etc.

Sir Paul Callaghan (a Physicist) did a talk on the NZ economy and how NZs reliance on Primary Produce and Tourism will keep us poor as a nation.

That's the problem. Things weren't tight during the pandemic. We flooded the country with money with scant consideration of what might happen. Uncorking LVRs at a time of underwriting cheap bank funding may have been the single biggest mistake this country has made in the MMP era.

I genuinely believe we'll see big ticket spending and toys pick up again when the OCR stabilises, it's the climb and uncertainty that puts people off more than anything.

I think what Key and his family copped was woeful and it wasn't come down enough on at the time, but if that's what it takes then so be it. But I'll be mad if Ardern quitting is what it takes for some people to actually reflect on that.

But since the rise of Fox/The Trump era, it's definitely gotten worse and more and more people feel emboldened to buy into imported, hugely polarised discourse. I feel like the sheer weight of numbers is probably a key difference between what Key put up with and what Ardern did. Both distasteful, both unpleasant, both unacceptable.

But I genuinely can't think of a time when the actual quality of policy and debate around issues has taken such a massive backside to hysterical nonsense amongst this big a group of the population. That's the terrifying bit.

I think things declined when social media and the mainstream media started doing people’s thinking for them.

People need to get off Twitter and the reporters need to report facts instead of editorialising everything.

Handsomedan:

It's a bit sad that the personal attacks are happening both online and in print.

I didn't vote for her, I don't like her politics and I am quite centre-right leaning, but she seems like a decent human and I think that is what should be taken into consideration when people comment on her - she's a human.

She's a mother and a partner/wife. She's a daughter and a friend. People should be more civil.

I think she was an awful leader of an awful government and frankly the country has gone backwards massively on her watch, but she wasn't personally responsible. She was professionally responsible, as the leader of the party, but she didn't do anything by herself. Labour/Green/Te Paati Maori were the coalition government and they collectively are to blame for the mess we're in today. Whether it'd be any different under a different government is a moot point: they were in power during the last two terms and this is the state of the country.

Now, let's leave her alone on a personal level and carry on criticising the party/parties we don't support on whichever side of the fence you sit and leave the personal attacks and character assassinations behind.

I feel much the same.

For me, David Seymours sound byte on the news summed up Jacinda Ardern quite well.

“Jacinda is a well-meaning person, but her idealism collided hard with reality.”

I feel like there's a powerful lesson in there - that Labour, with a clear outright majority, could not make in-roads in improving the quality of living or major projects in NZ in a timely way to the extent that it basically bought down Ardern.

There's a terrifying hint here that the actual strategic decision-making capabiltiy of the electorate now plays second fiddle to the agendas the civil service decides it will execute and the ones it simply isn't interested in advancing.

I've long looked at Labour's list of acheivements in this term as the things they were willing to spend political capital on - i.e. the things that actually mattered to them. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they represent the sum total of what they actually could change.

There's a terrifying implication there for our democracy and the concept of representative decision-making that perhaps should be openly discussed now that Ardern has resigned. Who is actually running the country?

LOL, Simon Thornley. What the hell did they ask him anything for? He's one of those idiotic "doctors" probably aligned with anti-vaxx crowd Doctors Against Science or whatever they call themselves (actually, it was anti-vaxx group "Plan B"). May as well have asked Voices for Freedom what they thought about her resigning, basically the same thing.

A look at Jacinda and her relationship with the media, and how things soured towards the end.

I've created a new topic to discuss the new Prime Minister: Chris Hipkins, New Zealand Prime Minister 2023 (geekzone.co.nz)

An interesting read Murdoch's wailing old white man scribes get Jacinda Ardern dead wrong, again - Michael West

What Australian conservative media says is a failure, numbers show as the opposite.

It is too much to expect any of her loud critics here to applaud this, but I would be interested in their take on it.

Newsroom also has a piece on all the abuse and crap she had to tolerate as PM, and point out that she seemed to cop it worse than a number of males in a similar scenario.

As usual, the conservative media jumps to the only insult they seem to know. Woke this, woke that. Apparently it's "woke" to put people ahead of dollars, and this is somehow apparently shameful in their opinion. There are legitimate reasons to criticise the government, no matter who runs the place there always is, but to these jackals the fact that money wasn't elevated above all else is the only thing they care about. They're absolutely deplorable.
