I don't share your confidence.  
Trump just made a mockery of the rule of law and the justice system that democratic nations must have - so democracy in the US pretty well died today.  Sure he can be voted out - but if you're loyal to him, then you've been endorsed to break laws to to ensure he's re-elected, and so long as you succeed, there will be no consequences.

 

SCOTUS just confirmed a few days ago that the POTUS isn't "above the law".  Trump just displayed that he believes he is.  Note that he commuted the sentence - it wasn't a pardon.  A pardon implies acceptance of guilt. Commutation of sentence doesn't - and the WH statement makes it clear that they reject the conviction.  So the POTUS has exercised de facto full executive power over the courts.

 

Edit: Trump could have also commuted the sentence (which was Stone's preference) because a pardon is an admission of guilt, and an admission of guilt waives fifth amendment right to remain silent (ie in any future trial - where Stone will now plead the the 5th).

And where is the drive to correct the many failings in America going to come from?

 

Not from Biden that's for sure. Even if he wins he will only serve one term - he looks way past it already so who knows what he will look like in 4+ years time. Probably like he's embalmed. They need a charismatic President with vision and drive who can inspire large swathes of the population for the good of the country. There isn't anyone.

 

And it's not from someone like Sanders or his ilk who, in their own way, are as divisive within America as Chump.

It would need constitutional amendment.  The chance of that (assuming Biden wins) is close to zero between 2020 and 2022, even if they win a senate majority  they'd need a supermajority to pass what's needed, the chance of that happening in 2022 mid-terms is still close to zero. So the USA is doomed to not having true representative democracy. It kind of worked for a while - but failed to anticipate election of a monster as POTUS - not by popular vote - but supported by enough of a minority in the population, a non-democratically elected upper house, and corrupt interference in the justice system.

 

* Term limits for SCOTUS judges (mitigate long-term harm from highly partisan appointments)
* Define limits / checks on POTUS executive power.
* Amendment to the 13th to de-incentivise de facto slavery in a for-profit penal system.
* universal suffrage - disallow all states to deny any free person the right to vote

 

There's quite a list.  The US is far from being as democratic as most developed nations, and despite constitutional promises of "freedom", is less free than most.

 

They've become what they tried to avoid.

President Trump has convinced his own supporters of the false conspiracy theory that mail-in ballots are subject to rampant fraud - so much so that Republicans are, evidently, refusing to vote by mail.

 

The Post’s Amy Gardner and Josh Dawsey report that Democratic voters have embraced mail ballots in far greater numbers than Republicans in primaries this year - alarming Republican strategists who say it could undercut their candidates, including Trump, particularly in states such as Florida and Arizona. 

 

In Michigan, Trump supporters actually burned absentee-ballot applications.

 

This is but one sign of the descent into madness that Trump has caused. 

 

Conspiracy theories, long a staple of the president, are spreading faster than covid-19 among his supporters, inducing mass delusion. ...

There are no doubt thousands of people in federal prison who deserved a presidential commutation more than Roger Stone. 

 

But after President Trump’s intervention on Friday, Mr. Stone will serve none of his prison sentence. 

 

The president may have had the power to help his longtime friend. But that does not make it any less a perversion of justice - indeed, it is one of the most nauseating instances of corrupt government favoritism the United States has ever seen.

 

There is no doubt about Mr. Stone’s guilt. 

 

During the 2016 presidential campaign, he tried to play intermediary between WikiLeaks, which had become a front for the Kremlin, and the Trump campaign, which reaped the benefits of WikiLeaks’s publication of stolen Democratic emails. ...

 

Though Attorney General William P. Barr moved to reduce Mr. Stone’s sentencing recommendation after conviction, even he called the case against Mr. Stone a “righteous” prosecution. ...
