I *hate* flying and I'd take a flight from AKL to Wellington in almost every instance.

What I'd really like, is express travel. What I mean by this, is quick trip to the airport (train ideally) out and into the airport, straight through to the plane with minimal lines and plane takes off, off boards and into transport. Often a 2 hour trip can take 3-3.5 hours by the time you wait around for various stages.

It would take longer to fly AKL to Hamilton than to drive.

Other than turbulence on some flights, I've never had a train trip that I could get a good quality sleep on or that I felt was significantly better than an equivalent class plane trip.

Travelled on fast trains in the US and Japan and Paris to London.

Trains are ok, planes for me, better most of the time (unless your goal is sight seeing).

It sounds quite idyllic. Catching glimpses of the setting sun while meandering through the natives forests and rugged mountainous interior of new Zealand.

Though in reality I'd anticipate a narrow and uncomfortable bed in a smelly, cramped cabin. The ever present rattle and thudding of the train making sleep an impossibility. If that's civilization you're welcome to it, I'm happy to travel cattle class on a rowdy q300 for 45 minutes.

The trains get my vote. What is the point of travel if you just step in a metal tube in one place and get out in another? Why are people always in such a hurry? Everyone should fly a few times for the thrill of take-off and landing and seeing your city from the air, but when that starts to pall, the train is by far the better option unless you just have to be somewhere on business. In that case, flying makes more sense. In every other one, the train is far better, also for the environment. As an aside, the best sleeps I have ever had were on a night train to Spain and another one to Thailand. Nothing beats being gently rocked to sleep.

I love the trains in UK and Europe and take them every time I'm over there. The tube isn't very practical for travellers with luggage, but that's ok. When I go up to Leeds from London there's better connections by rail. But that's as a tourist...

I'd be interested in the numbers on regional flights but I would have thought the majority would be business travellers, or time bound tourists, for whom slow trains are not an option.

Him and Winston are vying for the 'top jerk' spot. It's typical NZF subversive sensationalist rhetoric, but just empty claims with no intention to do anything about them. Just how desperate JA was to cut a coalition deal with them is becoming apparent. But as part of the coalition she could reign them in. He could have his portfolio removed, if she cared. But it was probably welcome relief from the abuse scandal.

If she took his post from him for a period of time I would have some respect for her, but I expect it would be the beginning of the end for the coalition. It would ensure a long-term National return to Government. I doubt people would forget the trainwreck this Government looks like from time to time. (Before anyone jumps down my throat, I didn't say it was the entire time).

This is the first time they have been under real pressure, I don't feel they are coping that well with it.

You guys have derailed it.

On a serious note the only intercity train trips I have done are Sydney to Blue Mountains and various trips around Europe. I've found those trains more comfy, relaxed and efficient than short distance air travel would have been.

I'm keen to try a longer train trip one day. Maybe something in Australia.
