Dumb as an orange door: "Trump's Afghanistan withdrawal announcement takes US officials by surprise"

Donald Trump has announced on Twitter that he wants to bring all US troops home from Afghanistan by Christmas – a plan that came as a surprise to administration officials and which puts complicated peace negotiations in jeopardy.

Multiple officials told the Associated Press they had not been informed of any such deadline and military experts said it would be impossible to withdraw all 5,000 US troops in Afghanistan and dismantle the US military headquarters by the end of the year.

They suggested the president’s claim was aimed at shifting the news cycle away from coronavirus coverage and that the Pentagon would not act on the order before the 3 November US election.

The announcement was, however, greeted enthusiastically by the Taliban on Thursday. If Trump follows through, the militant group would almost certainly claim it as a victory, after decades of couching their fight as a war against foreign aggression.

“It’s no surprise that the Taliban have welcomed Trump’s announcement that he’d have the troops home by Christmas. They spent 19 years fighting for this,” said Ashley Jackson, the director of the ODI’s Centre for the Study of Armed Groups.

“This is the last leverage the US had left in talks with the Taliban, and Trump is proposing to give it away for free.”

The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix

[The VP debate]

Vice President Pence kept ignoring the moderator. How does that help him?

The Fix’s Eugene Scott

Ignoring the moderator communicated a clear message: Pence (like Trump) operates by his own rules. And that was off-putting to voters already disappointed with the Trump administration.

Pence had an opportunity to win over undecided voters looking for a softer, kinder side to the Trump administration, but I’m not sure that the vice president gave them anything to make them think differently ...

Pence repeatedly talked over the (female) moderator and his (female) VP opponent.  There seems to be a subtle message here ...    🙄

AFAIK Pence isn't a Mormon.  He identifies as Catholic / Evangelical.

I was surprised at the Mormon claim, it's the Evangelicals that are the nutcases. Mormons are pretty decent people.

Reuters - 'Democracy isn't the objective': Republican U.S. senator

today

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican U.S. Senator Mike Lee came under fire from Democrats on Thursday for tweeting “democracy isn’t the objective” after the debate between Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Prominent Democrats called his Twitter post a sign of creeping authoritarian tendencies in President Donald Trump’s party.

Lee, a conservative who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee and has tested positive for COVID-19, tweeted several times during the vice presidential debate ...

We’re not a democracy,” Lee tweeted at one point. Then, in the early hours of Thursday, came a longer message that drew the most criticism:

Note the "prospefity" typo.

it's the Evangelicals that are the nutcases. .

It's "white" evangelicals, broadly including Baptists, something like 80% are Trumpers.

Religiosity is much higher in the black community, but IIRC only about < 10% support Trump.

"Moral Panic" may not be quite the correct term, but white evangelicals fear the ongoing decline of relevance of the church. (as if that stops them from believing their version of the fairy tale?  It doesn't)   That's why we're seeing this frightening activism from white evangelicals - attacking secular government and liberal policies and seeking authoritarian rule "under his eye". Yet they're a small minority - over-represented in the Trump administration.  There's more than a few of them here in NZ too.  Many of them are Trumpers too.

Trump's trying to make inroads in the Latino community, predominantly catholic.  However the Vatican clearly despises Trumpism.

Some pretty broad statements about crazy. Certain religious backgrounds when combined with a lack of higher secular education tends to bring out the crazies.

Technically, "evangelicals" are non-Catholic churches birthed by the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s. So Baptists, Methodists, Mormons, 7th Day Adventists, Jehovah Witness, Episcopal, Methodists and many others are evangelicals.

The "crazy" ones of evangelicals are a subset, usually "(Christian) Fundamentalists" or what used to be called "Born Again evangelicals."

You've completely missed the other "crazy" Fundamentalists: Orthodox Jews, and Muslim Fundamentalist. I'm sure there's group of Hindus that are also "crazy", but this is a hole in my education.

Catholics run the gambit of extremely progressive to fascists. Even among Catholics, ones with lots secular education tend to be liberal. I've heard a number of active Catholic priests who have said that the Bible is not a literal document; that the Bible is always changing; there is no single version of the Bible that's completely accurate. But again these are priests who are highly educated.

The truly dangerous evangelicals are to the ones who want to forcefully bring the rapture, the second-coming.

This group would include Pence.

I'm pretty sure even Trump can't get out of the 14 days contagious period for coronavirus. His so-called "doctor" is full of crap. How much was he paid to say that about him, I wonder.

I kid you not... "Trump, in total reversal, is telling allies he is, in fact, interested in a broad stimulus deal"

let me guess

"i never said i was going to stop it. i always knew we had to keep at it. it was the democrats that stopped it. they are evil. remember that when you vote." and America believes him.
