Watching the news tonight. Russia is complaining that Ukraine is attacking Russian territory. Bizzare to say the least.
Russia's actions in Ukraine are quite justifiable in Russian eyes as Ukraine is rightfully part of the Russian federation and all they are doing is saving Ukraine. Something for which the ungrateful Ukrainians should be thanking them for. How dare they attack our military installations.

Yet the massive coal and gas companies, headquartered in Australia (Santos, BHP, etc) or USA (ChevronTexaco, ExxonMobil) and mining Australian Coal and Gas, are making record profits, while paying record low taxes. I'm having to listen to Minerals Council ads on the radio telling me my state government needs to reconsider raising resource royalties because it would make them uncompetitive with other states so we all need to campaign the government to not tax them (u wot m8?)
A not insignificant amount of inflation comes from profit margins. Things like the war are just excuses used by some businesses to raise prices.
That's deviating a bit from this thread's topic though.
For a long read.

This is a major problem around the world - some political scumbags would rather put up with serious civil unrest than simply letting people go.
After one WWI, Denmark let Schleswig-Holstein go back to Germany;
Recently, Czechoslovakia split peacefully into Czechia and Slovakia; Sudan split and created South Sudan.
Now we just need the appropriate dictators to let go of the Ukraine, Taiwan, the Uyghurs, the Kurds, the Tamil part of Sri Lanka, Tibet, Hong Kong and half of the artificially created African states. etc
Then we can live happily ever after.
Wait !! - is that a pig flying past?

What bothers me is that the Ukraine effect will lessen. The news effect will lessen. IIRC today Putin said it will go on and on. There needs to be a meeting of the minds, the BIG minds. Countries need to man up. We will deal with Russia for trade or we wont. Those that will get excluded from world affairs, its that simple. This war is not about two nations that both have "some" justification. IMO Russian Federation needs to go where PRNK has gone. Totally isolated.
Don't worry about it. Putin says there will be nuclear war.

This war in Ukraine is really just an extension of WWII. The West and Russia were only ever united to defeat Hitler. Once Hitler was defeated the West and Russia were no longer allies. This has been festering since then in one form or another.
General Paton wanted to defeat Russia after Germany had been defeated. He despised the way Stalin and his cronies operated.
Winston Churchill had a plan drawn up to attack Russia in 1945. He felt the Polish people had been let down by allowing Russia to take control of Poland. Also I think he had no time for Stalin. History shows how bad Stalin was, doing things to his own people that made Hitler look like an angel.
I fear the only way to resolve the war in Ukraine with any finality and stop any future Soviet actions like those in Ukraine is for Russia to be defeated like Germany and Japan were after WWII. That is removing the current regime and putting in place an occupier/caretaker government to allow the country to restucture, grow and develop it's own organic free democratic process unhindered by the ghosts of soviet tyranny.
Perhaps we'd be in a much better place today if Paton and Churchill had got their way in 1945.

Putin has a plan to flee to South America if he loses the war in Ukraine, former aide says

The Kremlin began working on a backup plan, unofficially dubbed "Noah's Ark", in the spring said Abbas Gallyamov, a political consultant and ex-speechwriter to Putin, in a Telegram post.
Gallyamov cited unnamed insiders for his information. He has not worked for Putin since 2010 and is himself living in exile from Russia. He framed the evacuation as an extreme contingency plan.

After one WWI, Denmark let Schleswig-Holstein go back to Germany.
Michail Gorbachev, in the huge of his "perestroika policy", returned East Germany in 1989 (more than 44 years after WW II) with the following words to its regime: "He who comes too late is punished by life".
In my eyes, he was the only credible Russian head of state who put Russia on the right track at the time and gave it a livable, human face. He initiated three social revolutions in Russia, was rightly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, died after his critism on August 30, 2022 "after a long, serious illness" (no, no window this time) and the poison dwarf was not present at his funeral due to "scheduling problems". That says it all. He was probably too busy thinking about how to socially return Russia to the Stone Age.
