I've seen this perception trotted out a lot. You have to be able to sell your policies. A lot of people think it was all down to Jacindamania, that the policies were the same and the only reason Labour went up was because of her.

Look at it from the other angle though, many people liked their policies and agreed with them but didn't like Andrew Little. Of course, if you are voting for National regardless then of course you are going to claim it's all down to the "lipstick on a pig" effect, rather than the policies you support not having as much support as you think.

8.75 years Labour couldn't find a leader to sell their "amazing" policies? You are kidding yourself. I have yet to meet a Labour supporter who could even name 2 policies let alone 3 Labour party candidates apart from JA and Andrew Little.

ocs: You can't call Jacinda New Zealand's Donald Trump. Trump had zero political experience. Jacinda has been in Parliament for nine years. The closest NZ has to Trump is John Key. Promoted by National within a very short time in Parliament, to bring a "business-friendly" approach, promising tax cuts, cutting public spending to below sustainable levels (because you can't have one without the other) and bringing in many wealthy business people on his coat-tails.
New Zealand will spend many years making up for National's under-investment in core infrastructure, and no, it can't happen overnight.

What has JA's 9 years got her?

Neither is like Trump for personality. He is pretty poisonous, whereas I see JA as clueless as a leader. She isn't fit for that role as demonstrated by her unwillingness to deal with issues that needed strong and decisive leadership. I think she is probably a decent enough politician but her anxiety doesn't make her suited to high-pressure roles.

She didn't want the role but took it out of a sense of responsibility. People voted for her because she was pretty different to what they have come to see in politics for the past long time.

I've said it before, JA needed 3 years in opposition as a leader, which would have given Labour time to investigate if they could, in fact, deliver on their policies.

I can't agree your assessment of Nationals 9 years in power, you sound like you are reading off a Labour facebook post. Where do you think Labour got the money they are now spending on their lolly scramble? Reality is, National would have done a lot of the same things that Labour are now doing, and done it with a steady hand and with proven leadership.

Can somebody explain to me why Claire Curran wants to turn RNZ into a TV broadcaster eventually.

What's wrong with putting the money into TVNZ and having some of their broadcasting paid for by the Government and ad free? Surely it's a more cost effective option rather than starting from the ground up.

What's wrong with a dedicated license fee? NZ Broadcasting was a much better proposition and response when we did.

I'd say that they ought to give up really. Does anyone actually watch NZ TV? Generally Netflix or Sky will fill most people's needs nowadays. A diet of bad reality TV (and sorry - I did not mean to imply that there was good reality TV!) and various programs purchased from overseas, mixed with Amateur Hour "News" programs and coarse, boorish "quiz" shows full of knob gags from Dai Henwood is hardly worth spending taxpayer dollars on.

Make it a subscription only service and see how well it stands on it's own two feet.

I am not easily offended and the show used to be good but it has deteriorated over the last few seasons and now it is a poorly produced mess with participants that are just bad and come across as try hards.

I'm amused (and not entirely surprised) at how effortlessly this thread has drifted from discussing aspects of our Prime Minister into the merits (or otherwise) of stand-up comedy...

However, to bring us back on track once again, I found an interesting throwaway line in this article from Duncan Garner:

Obviously we're increasingly concerned with the company she keeps and how she manages this. More on that later.

I wonder what he could be referring to here? There have been a number of rumours circulating recently that (if substantiated) could have a dramatic impact on Ms. Ardern's immediate future in politics. I sincerely hope that they come to nothing...

Firstly, look at the bolded statement above, rather than the PM herself.

Beyond that, it's not the kind of thing that you're likely to find on Google anyway... Some of it may be subject to name suppression, and some of it may be pure fabrication, so I'm not going perpetuate any of that here. But, again, despite my opinion of Ardern's suitability for her role and her performance to date - I hope that none of it is true.

It's dumbed down quiz based on UK shows Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Mock the Week.

Dai Henwood is as funny as root canal surgery and the rest of them not much funnier. The idea of a news quiz in a country in which, generally, no actual news happens from one week to the next is a very odd one.

Your mileage apparently varies..!
