Rikkitic:

Are the rioters under arrest being charged with federal crimes? I would assume so since the crimes were committed on federal property in the District of Columbia, so no State jurisdiction. Does that mean that Trump can suddenly pardon them all while he is still technically president? Is there anything to be done about that?

Ironically they are allowed for the resident state to prosecute which is dumb. As is the case in any election, some states are GOP strongholds (no issue with that) who would be lenient. DC should be prosecuting IMHO. They need to draw a line. Free speech and orderly protests are 200% fine, anarchy isn't.

Batman:

saw some screenshots of the posts on Parler, and man, it's really twisted - right up there with lizard people

now i know what i thought I knew up to 70 million Americans were thinking - unfortunately i think they include the trump family and some R senators

No. 70 million Americans didn't vote for Trump. Although technically they did, but the vast majority voted Republican and HAD to vote for Trump. So dont confuse that metric.

Were the republicans holding a gun to their head? They didn't have to vote for Trump, they chose to vote for him. They could have chosen to split their vote, which many people did.

IMHO many voters for the party they support, simple as that which is patently obvious. Patently obvious. Republicans holding a gun to their head? Thats quite childish.

He's off to Florida the day before, is that worth allowing for? As the Inauguration is a done deal, and that the loser won't be speaking.

As I've said earlier, I feel Jan 20 will be a good day. Racist extremists kept at length, normal people making normal speeches. No mention of the last 4 years.

Has the orange "whack a mole" shown any where else yet?

You can track the fun live here. There's other trackers there as well, for example resignations and impeachment/25th amendment.

kingdragonfly: As you correctly pointed out, DC is not a state. All felonies committed in DC are federal crimes.

And a special addition for Trump from the same source:

The operational plan for nuclear strike orders is entirely concerned with the identity of the commanding officer and the authenticity of the order, and there are no safeguards to verify that the person issuing the order is sane. Notably, Major Harold Hering was discharged from the Air Force in late 1973 for asking the question "How can I know that an order I receive to launch my missiles came from a sane president?"

Wait, what? There was a protest in Auckland about this? I didn't hear anything about that.

What's the deal there? More losers who feel like they've been hard done by? Move to the USA if you feel that badly about the orange buffoon losing, or if it really bothers you that much. I'm sure he'd care just as much about you as he does about his thug friends on Thursday (ie, 0).

"Women for Trump" and other people protesting against a non-existent lockdown.

People are dumb.

Oh well that's ok then. Supporting a political party absolves you of voting for the mango meatsack.

Interesting counterpoint to the "end of democracy in the US" gloom that came up on Al Jazeera's "Inside Story" today from a Russian observer, that in the past when something like the recent events have occurred it's led to reforms that have made the US stronger, not weaker. Unfortunately it's not been posted to Youtube yet but the premise were that things like the Bonus Army were a much bigger threat than Trump's nutters were, ending in a clash with cavalry charges, infantry with bayonets and tear gas, and tanks. Similarly, politicians like Earl Long were much more successful and long-lived populists than Trump. The response to this was changes and reform to make sure something like that wouldn't happen again, and more a strengthening than a weakening of the US.
