I think Bridges and Bennett are already down. And out. They may just be too outraged to realise it yet.

Sure, what JLR has done is underhanded, nasty, spiteful (and the rest), but even so I believe that it has left the leader and deputy with no viable future in National.

Bennett may have survived this and been a caretaker leader briefly until National elected a new one, but she's now perceived by many as being the person to brought Ross's personal life into the frame in a form of retribution and it would be incredibly difficult for her to build any trust with caucus colleagues after that.

IMHO, Bridges was a poorly performing leader, but he didn't deserve this. But politics is a rough game, and it's not always fair. He's either going to need a miracle, or he's finished.

I think you are right. This affair has not been handled well for what seems to be some time. However the performance of Simon Bridges as leader has been at best amateur hour but more accurately inept and disgraceful.If he really cares about the party and New Zealand he should resign and allow the recovery to begin. I also believe that Paula Bennett will go down as collateral damage. This saga has probably doomed National to the opposition benches until atleast 2023.

Don't forget they are about to have a bi-election that could change the balance of power (Malcolm Turnbull's vacated seat).
And the latest kerfuffle here affects the stability of government not one jot. In fact it takes the heat off them for a week.

I believe the only thing missing from JLR's attempt to replicate Francis Urquhart's efforts on House of Cards (UK) was he didn't manage to slip in the phrase "You might very well think that, I couldn't possibly comment" at any of his media conferences. The trouble is, works of fiction don't always work as templates for real life.
I think he may as well save his deposit for the bi-election.

If we believe Newsroom, they have been investigating JLR's conduct for about a year.

So the article on his conduct isn't a response to his accusations, but likely has been published earlier than planned as a response. Melanie Reid must be a bit gutted JLR has stepped down before she could expose him and claim a scalp.

and not only that the so called Chinese business man donation is apparently fake. The businessman has just announced that it wasnt him who made the donation.

As I said earlier this is all a bit sad and even with 4 women(unnamed) coming forward it is becoming clear that Bridges could well be victim here, maybe victim to his unpopularity.

I see now we have people climbing into Winstone "Putting the boot in" LOL many of the people in this forum have regularly put the boot into JA and the present Govt. The list is huge. You know who you are, get over it This is a shocking event in NZ political life and we should all be ashamed of the way it is going. No wonder our younger people are turned off voting. If some of the accusations being made are true, don't try apportion the blame on other political parties. National have stuffed up They need to have a major clean out at the top and see if they can restore some of the respect they use to have. If other parties are aware of misdeeds they need to tidy up their acts as well. We need a solid opposition as well as steady Govt for democracy to be successful. As I have stated many moons ago Approximately 30% of the population will always vote Blue the same applies to Labour These people will defend their parties no matter what and we are seeing it in all the blogs throughout the media. Their backsides could be on fire and they wouldn't change. The other 40% of us are the ones who will make the changes ( probably 25% as 15% don't vote or care).

There is a difference between voters putting the boot into a party, and opposition doing it, esp since said party has said they want to "be kind".

There was a sex scandal involving young adults at a Labour Camp and there was no clean out at the top. In fact their leader backed the people involved without even waiting for the results of an investigation, then moved those people to cushy Government paid jobs the same day Ardern had her baby. Labour has no right to the moral high ground.

Winston could have simply said what is entirely correct, that it's none of his business and that he shouldn't or wouldn't comment.

I do find it amazing you are positioning yourself as a swing voter. I have seen no evidence to support that.

That's not quite as reported:

He would not go into details of the pair's discussions, but said Zhang had made no "personal contribution" to the donation.

"Zhang is not the alleged donator of the funds," Tong said.

"I fully support Zhang and have no issues otherwise I would be on a plane coming home. Best you focus your efforts on Ross."

That's not saying the donation was fake, but more-or-less confirms that a (the?) donation was made, even if Zhang had made no "personal contribution".

So far, yes she has been nice and quiet about it, in line hopefully, with her sticking to the words she spoke at the UN about "being kind". It's really none of her business and she has more than enough on her plate without worrying about Nationals scandal.

Every word she would say about it would simply detract from anything she would hope to gain.

National had very little to say about the Scandals that rocked Labour every few days for months.

I disagree that it's noteworthy. It's simply a smart thing to do. If your opponent is tearing himself apart, the last thing you'd want to do is get involved.

It's not like there's anything for Ardern to gain from getting involved, and by staying out of it Labour reap all of the benefit and avoid being tainted in any way.

Winston's always been a stirrer, but frankly I'm surprised that he's decided to put himself into the frame on this one. (Not for any moral reasons, just because I can't discern any benefit to him from sullying his hands.)
