Why are you so nasty and always take things to a personal level? No need for this at all to someone who has left. You are indicating this comment because he does not support your views. really? So pathetic.
I see Jacinda Ardern has been named in TIME Magazine's top 100 Most Influential People list for 2018. Well done!

To be fair she shares that list with the likes of Trump and Kim Jong Un

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
MikeB4:rjt123:networkn:MikeB4:I wrote "ill" dammit stupid spell/grammer check. grrrrrrrrrr.
Yeah we can ill afford it. A saving grace is we have no real way of getting to war with two 757's and four aging C130's and one logistics ship.
Heh, but equally, neither can we defend ourselves either. We will have farmers on rowboats with 1 oar and a shotgun defending us if it gets much worse.
Having the Singaporean fighter jets based at Ohakea was a good move. I'd welcome more along those lines...
The presence of the F16s for training would not mean they were available for defense of Aotearoa.
rjt123:
Yeah. I was thinking more along the lines of inviting others in on a more permanent basis.
I agree, we had a squadron of Canberra Bombers and a squadron of Vampires and what was to become First Battalion Infantry now based at Linton based there for a long time it would be a good payback if they were to base a squadron of F16's at Ohakea for defence assistance not just training.
I believe we are better served looking to our own region for defence arrangements than looking to Great Britain and the US. We could also do with lifting our budget a little but we really cannot afford that now.

You've made yourself a bit of a hostage to fortune there if we later find out he died of a heart attack or something...!
That didn't occur to me and if that did turn out to be the case I would deeply regret it. I just assumed he got tired of all the blowback and went somewhere else where his views were better received. Here he was constantly being jumped on by many people, including me, and he seemed to be well to the right politically of the general consensus. I figured he just got tired of having his heels snapped at by the howling mob. That is something I can relate to. Others have also disappeared from this site. If his absence is in fact due to illness or worse then of course I am sorry for that and I apologise unreservedly. I hope that does not turn out to be the case.

None of us are infallible and it pays to remember that minefields are tricky suckers and it always pays to tread softly and carefully.

We could invite the Stralians to be based here. A dual defence would make sense.

true we had a squadron of A4s based in the Northern Territory for a long time. Unfortunately defence is not something that Labour thinks or thinks well about.

Defence arrangements are also linked to trade so its a complex beast for a small country. Australia seem to have a bad attitude towards us, so being too close to them doesnt seem perfect.
As to your comment "we cannot afford more defence spending now"...when can we? At the end of last year we were probably at our most affluent for a few decades. A key part of the housing shortage was directly due to our affluent economy and the need for greater immigration.

The bad attitude is more the press and some minor politicians, cooperation especially between the defence forces is very healthy. Defence budgeting is not about what wealth we currently have it's about what revenue we will have. It's pointless buying assets now that we cannot afford down the track to met the running costs, eg a Fighter Wing for the RNZAF.
Defence arrangements do not necessarily need to be trade linked they can be based on their own merits.

NATO is not based on trade. For example.
