A Government that only knows how to tear down for a "Disposeable Vape" tax cut.
Except if you are a landlord.

A legacy of social destruction, rotting infrastructure and skill gaps for future Governments to deal with.
Future governments that won't be able to spend on everything all at once, rinse and repeat.

The hint that if Hospital Boards struggle to operate, expand for population and fix old infrastructure within budget crazily becomes an excuse to cut that budget further as punishment , for whom?

And yet the latest Taxpayers Union poll has NACT able to govern comfortably without NZF. Landlords vote a lot more consistently than the kind of people who are being shafted by the Luxon government. And they get more votes than tenants do, too. *shrug*

Lost for words.

Children’s Minister Karen Chhour needs to reverse the Government’s funding cuts putting at risk the jobs of more than 300 frontline workers providing vital care for 4000 vulnerable children.

Children’s charity Stand Tū Māia is today taking urgent legal action against Oranga Tamariki for unilaterally reneging on a three-year $21 million contract after only six months.
The contract funds Stand Tū Māia to provide specialised trauma treatment and wraparound support for families with complex needs living with multiple forms of adversity.

Oranga Tamariki plans to end funding under its Stand Tū Māia contract on 31 December 2024. This would see more than 300 workers, the majority of which are registered social workers, lose their jobs from 4 January 2025, says Public Service Association Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi Assistant Secretary Melissa Wooley.

"It is totally unacceptable that the support for 4000 vulnerable children and their families, and the jobs of more than 300 workers should be axed so suddenly, with no thought to the consequences," Woolley says.

"Children’s Minister Karen Chhour needs to step up and put a stop to this appalling and cold-hearted decision which comes just weeks after the Prime Minister delivered an apology in Parliament to the survivors of abuse in care.

"Minister Chhour needs to act quickly to ensure that the Government does not trigger another round of unnecessary suffering and trauma for a new generation of vulnerable children and by so doing write another dark chapter in the history of this country.

"It is unacceptable for the Minister to hide behind the convenient excuse that this is merely an ‘operational matter’. She needs to urgently intervene and ensure Oranga Tamariki has the fundin git needs to honour the contract it signed with Stand Tū Māia," Woolley says.

"Not only is the Government not honouring a contract it signed but it is once again breaking its promise to New Zealanders that spending cuts would not affect frontline services.

"This is just a further example of how the Government’s decision to prioritise funding tax relief for landlords and support for tobacco companies is seeing public services being cut in communities across the motu," Woolley says.

"This is a Government of broken promises," Woolley says.

but it is once again breaking its promise to New Zealanders that spending cuts would not affect frontline services.

More than likely these cuts wont affect many here. But its about compassion and support for those that need it. When we donate to charity, easy. But for the "charitees" if there is such a word, its huge. Thats now lost

Are we allowed funny names now? The Curia poll is really quite credible.

The poll is of likely voters. It is what it is. If there was actually a massive outcry, as opposed to an internet echo chamber, against the government then the polling would generally reflect that.

It's normal for a first term government at this stage of the election cycle to hold a lead. I'd say they have pretty soft approval but it's far from certain they will lose the next election. A lot of it will come down to the economy. If it picks up they'll win, if it doesn't they will be in trouble.

As opposed to the policy stuff this is actually quite concerning.

The speaker overruling the clerk of the house on this type of question is not something I find at all acceptable unless the clerk has clearly made an error. I don't think this is the case at all and only feeds the impression of corruption and lack of faith in institutions.

And yet I split my vote 90% of the time. I have vote Nats, Labour, Greens, Maori.

Given its one person one vote, I am unsure how landlords get more votes than tenants.

Are you able to clarify what you mean by this given every person gets the same number of votes? Are you saying there are more landlords than there are tenants?

I eventually read it as the parties whose policies benefit landlords gets more votes than other parties do regardless of what they do. It took me a few goes though.

You get a vote in every council election you own property in. A tenant does not.

Well, that too. But landlords get additional council votes for owning additional properties that tenants don't get. And also they turn out to elections at a higher rate.

Thanks for the clarification. As it was mentioned on the context of the Taxpayers Union poll and the government I only considered it in terms of the general election.

Yeah, sorry, wasn't too clear; they are separate but related.

Based on what you posted some landlords get additional votes, not all. It’s somewhat dependent on living in a different ward to the one your rental is in.

How dare landlords actually turn out to the polls. It’s outrageous that those who participate in a democracy get some benefit from their participation.

This is right. I disagree with some of your points of view but this is the case, always. If people don't vote and complain about the results... You get what you (didn't) vote for.
