neb: Uhh... whut? He does realise, as an evangelical Christian, that Israel is full of Jewish people who aren't, right? Or is he hoping to have it cleared for use by Christians when the rapture comes?

 

 

The connection seems to be Christian Zionism, a rather strange concept given that its proponents are right-wing evangelicals who have historically not been so well-disposed towards Jewish people. As this earlier post points out, it's a pretty odd alliance.

BBC News - Trump Scottish golf resorts claimed over £3m in furlough

Donald Trump's golf courses and leisure businesses in Scotland claimed over £3m in UK government furlough money, newly-published accounts show.

 

Covid restrictions caused substantial losses at Trump resorts in Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire with both companies reducing staff.

 

Trump Turnberry saw turnover more than halved and it recorded a loss of more than £3m in 2020.

 

The other course and resort at Balmedie also reported a loss, of £1.3m. ...

Of course Trump will simply ignore ignore, and screw over some local Scott law firm by not paying his anyone anything.

...The anthrax claim was first made by Joe Oltmann on his Conservative Daily podcast earlier this week. In a video recording of the podcast, Oltmann can be seen coughing and sneezing on camera, symptoms often associated with COVID-19 or other illnesses.

Instead, Oltmann, who has spent much of 2021 spreading bogus election conspiracies, claimed that he and his fellow conspiracy theorists who recently attended the conference had been attacked by anthrax. The conference, run by Tulsa businessman Clay Clark, was headlined by figures like disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump adviser Roger Stone, and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell. Eric Trump, the son of former President Donald Trump, also spoke at the event.

While the following sound good, Trump has a history of committing crimes, and then the cheekiness to brag about it publicly.

There's already an excess of proof that a coup was attempted.

The Guardian: Capitol panel to investigate Trump call to Willard hotel in hours before attack

Congressman Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack, has said the panel will open an inquiry into Donald Trump’s phone call seeking to stop Joe Biden’s certification from taking place on 6 January hours before the insurrection.

The chairman said the select committee intended to scrutinize the phone call – revealed last month by the Guardian – should they prevail in their legal effort to obtain Trump White House records over the former president’s objections of executive privilege.

“That’s right,” Thompson said when asked by the Guardian whether the select committee would look into Trump’s phone call, and suggested House investigators had already started to consider ways to investigate Trump’s demand that Biden not be certified as president on 6 January.

Thompson said the select committee could not ask the National Archives for records about specific calls, but noted “if we say we want all White House calls made on January 5 and 6, if he made it on a White House phone, then obviously we would look at it there.”

The Guardian reported last month that Trump, according to multiple sources, called lieutenants based at the Willard hotel in Washington DC from the White House in the late hours of 5 January and sought ways to stop Biden’s certification from taking place on 6 January.

Republicans cheered when [United States House of Representatives / Congressman] Chris Smith, a leading anti-abortion advocate, flipped a Democratic-held district and was elected to Congress in 1980. He’s won in landslides for the following four decades.

But now the leader of Republican Party, former President Donald Trump, wants Smith out of office. Two GOP candidates are answering Trump’s call to challenge New Jersey’s longest-serving congressman in next year’s primary just as Smith’s new district gains more loyal supporters of the former president.

The reason? Smith, who often split with Trump and House GOP leaders during his 41 years on Capitol Hill, went too far in the eyes of the ex-president when he was one of only 13 House Republicans to back President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill.

Alan Steinberg, who worked in the administrations of Gov. Christie Whitman and President George W. Bush, said it has more to do with the state of the Republican Party than Smith.

“He’s never changed,” Steinberg said. “The party has changed.”

Former Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd Dist., who also often opposed Trump when he served in Congress, said the ex-president’s actions show any dissent is no longer permitted.

“The former president doesn’t take kindly to somebody who disagrees in any way shape or form with him,” LoBiondo said

AP‘Slow-motion insurrection’: How GOP seizes election power

n the weeks leading up to the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, a handful of Americans — well-known politicians, obscure local bureaucrats — stood up to block then-President Donald Trump’s unprecedented attempt to overturn a free and fair vote of the American people.

In the year since, Trump-aligned Republicans have worked to clear the path for next time.

In battleground states and beyond, Republicans are taking hold of the once-overlooked machinery of elections. While the effort is incomplete and uneven, outside experts on democracy and Democrats are sounding alarms, warning that the United States is witnessing a “slow-motion insurrection” with a better chance of success than Trump’s failed power grab last year.

They point to a mounting list of evidence: Several candidates who deny Trump’s loss are running for offices that could have a key role in the election of the next president in 2024. In Michigan, the Republican Party is restocking members of obscure local boards that could block approval of an election. In Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the GOP-controlled legislatures are backing open-ended “reviews” of the 2020 election, modeled on a deeply flawed look-back in Arizona. The efforts are poised to fuel disinformation and anger about the 2020 results for years to come.

All this comes as the Republican Party has become more aligned behind Trump, who has made denial of the 2020 results a litmus test for his support. Trump has praised the Jan. 6 rioters and backed primaries aimed at purging lawmakers who have crossed him. Sixteen GOP governors have signed laws making it more difficult to vote. An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll showed that two-thirds of Republicans do not believe Democrat Joe Biden was legitimately elected as president.

The result, experts say, is that another baseless challenge to an election has become more likely, not less.

“It’s not clear that the Republican Party is willing to accept defeat anymore,” said Steven Levitsky, a Harvard political scientist and co-author of the book “How Democracies Die.” “The party itself has become an anti-democratic force.”

Only change I'd make is the "of" to "while".

I don't blame Trump for coronavirus coming to America - that was not his fault. But his response was incredibly slow, and by the time he actually got around to doing anything serious about the threat, it was far, far, far too late.

 

How would Hillary have handled it if she were in charge, I wonder.

 

Oddly, despite Florida having a really high number of cases, their governor Ron (a massive Trump fanboy) is fighting things like mask mandates and vaccinations - things that would protect voters, yet he rates highly in opinion polls...somehow.

He would have been rolling long before Trump. Prior to a shift that began in the 1920s the Democrats and Republicans were essentially the polar opposites of what they are today.

This is from Kansas, the mid-west, but could have been easily from Florida.
