kingdragonfly: Rather long article from Associated Press reporter Nick Riccardi.

Posted in several newspapers, in last 24 hours

AP‘Slow-motion insurrection’: How GOP seizes election power

...

Late night comedian Bill Maher has been talking about the "Slow-Moving Coup" for a while now, but I don't know how widely disseminated it's been. I posted a video some pages back which aligns pretty closely to what this article is saying, but does a better job of reinforcing just how frightening it is. I'll link it again here for those who missed it previously.

Wow, the antivaxxers are really unhappy with Trump saying he got vaccinated, and the booster too. The sky must be falling for them. Whatever next???

It's the first time I've seen and read this. Incredible. Is there a longer Maher video I've missed too?

quickymart:

I don't blame Trump for coronavirus coming to America - that was not his fault. But his response was incredibly slow, and by the time he actually got around to doing anything serious about the threat, it was far, far, far too late.

His really toxic legacy wasn't even the slow response, it was how he politicised it:

Show your loyalty to the Dear Leader: Claim it's a hoax.

Show your loyalty to the Dear Leader: Don't take precautions like social distancing.

Show your loyalty to the Dear Leader: Refuse to get vaccinated.

Show your loyalty to the Dear Leader: Don't wear a mask

And the ultimate show of loyalty to the Dear Leader: Take part in superspreader events, frequently ones organised by the Dear Leader.

In (most) functioning democracies the response from the government was: We're all in this together and need to unite against a common enemy, Covid.

In the US, the response from the government was: We're all in this together and need to unite against a common enemy, non-Retrumplicans.

Depressingly accurate. I only wish you were joking.

I dunno what it takes for Trump to not be popular - in the (mostly Republican states) where vaccination rates are low, cases are going through the roof and people dropping like flies. Yet Trump and that Ron bloke (not Jeremy, the governor of Florida) are sooooooooooooo loved for sticking it to the government and their horrible mandates - yet they don't see that they're only killing people by not adhering to public health rules.

Of course if Ron and others of his ilk caught coronavirus maybe he/they would sing a different tune then.

BBC News - Marjorie Taylor Greene: Twitter bans congresswoman over Covid misinformation

breaking

Twitter has suspended the personal account of the US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene for repeated violations of its rules around coronavirus misinformation.

The action against the Republican lawmaker came under Twitter's strike system, which identifies posts about the virus that could cause harm.

The company had previously suspended the Georgia congresswoman four times.

Rep Greene said the ban proved that the company is "an enemy to America".

In a lengthy statement posted to the social media outlet, Telegram, [Greene] accused Twitter of aiding unidentified enemies in "a Communist revolution".

(only slightly off-topic 🙂)

"NPR" is "National Public Radio" in the US. It's widely regarded as center-left, intellectual, solid, bland, trust-worthy.

NPR: Trump still says his supporters weren't behind the Jan. 6 attack — but I was there

"There are some reports that Antifa sympathizers may have been sprinkled throughout the crowd," Laura Ingraham [of Fox News] said on her show that night.
...
"Those weren't Trump supporters," said a man named Phil from Kentucky, claiming the only people breaking in were dressed all in black.

"So they were black helmets, black clothes, black backpacks who started busting the windows first," said Janie, a nurse from South Carolina, who said she saw members of Antifa and Black Lives Matter committing the violence. She also claimed the Trump supporters were actually trying to fight them off. But when we mentioned we were on site that day, she admitted that she never actually came close enough to the Capitol to see any violence.

We let her know that the Proud Boys were dressed in all black that day, having planned to forego their usual colors of black and yellow in order to be "incognito."

"I didn't know that," she said.
...
But the thread attempting to blame Antifa and Black Lives Matter was repeated by former President Trump himself as recently as two weeks ago. In an interview with Candace Owens on Dec. 21, he also said it was FBI informants instigating the crowd.
...
So far, more than 700 people have been charged. The defendants are largely white, and 13% of them have ties to the military or law enforcement. More than 100 of them have alleged ties to known extremist or fringe organizations, like the pro-Trump conspiracy theory QAnon, the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, and the Three Percenters, a part of the anti-government militia movement. But the bulk had no ties to extremist groups.
...
The University of Chicago Project on Security and Threats has been tracking insurrectionist sentiment in the U.S. for a year now. It found that 21 million share the same beliefs that motivated rioters that day.

In other words, millions of Americans support the idea of political violence. Researchers call it "an American insurrectionist movement" that, a year after the attack on the Capitol, is still alive and well.

I have to say I have lost hope and stopped caring. I believe we are witnessing the end of the Roman Republic. Soon Trump will appoint his dog attorney general and the senate will be replaced by a mob of sheep.

I have a feeling Mr Barr will not be working for any future Trump administration. Barr didn't find any election fraud (remember?), ergo, Trump most likely hates his truth-telling guts, and wouldn't go near him ever again.

This sorta seems to fit best in this thread; yet another idiotic Republican governor is suddenly a deadly pandemic expert:
