And the Fox zombies will believe every word. Some time ago Fox claimed that Angela Merkel had stated that there were no-go zones in German cities. A UK ex-pat living in Germany found the interview they were referencing, which was something like 45 minutes long and mostly about fiscal policy, with some throwaway questions at the end to fill up the time. The only even vaguely related question she was asked was a non-question about Thomas de Maizière, the interior minister, to which she gave a non-reply about being confident in his performance.
The ex-pat hypothesised that they were banking on the fact that Fox viewers were unlikely to speak German and so wouldn't catch on to the fact that this was yet another story invented by Fox. My response was that Fox could pretty much rely on the fact that no Fox viewer would ever think of checking anything they said even if the interview had been in English. Referencing a boring fiscal-policy discussion in another language was totally unnecessary.
An example of this was something I mentioned here a while back where a guy on a YT video claimed the Washington Post had written something so obviously wrong that my immediate reaction was that that had to have come from Fox because the WaPo would never get it that wrong. Sure enough, it was another fine Fox creation.
So none of their viewers will do even the most trivial amount of checking - it was maybe 15 seconds with Google - for anything Fox tells them. They'll swallow absolutely anything Fox feeds them.
To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself—that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed.
