Why? Unless you can offer logic rather than emotion, I won't understand your reasoning anyway. It has nothing to do with where I live - Britain, where I lived for longer, wastes far more money on foreign aid than NZ and I can't see the point of that either.

Charity begins at home - Labour and much of the public has spent quite some while complaining about all manner of things they require to be fixed in NZ. Logic dictates that available funds are used to fix those things before they are used to fix things in places NZ taxpayers do not live.

If you understood the issues you would understand the method. It is better that we help build their nations ability to be self sufficient than having migration from them that puts additional burden on our services and makes it harder for their country to grow. So by helping them we help our own people including our own peoples in the islands.

Seems to me that this method has failed given it's been in place for quite some time.

Equally Mike, you need to consider that other people's opinions whilst they might differ from your own, aren't necessarily wrong. When it comes to issues like this, there is a tendency for you to have a fairly short fuse, people either agree with you, or they are wrong. It's reasonable for people to question things, including others reasoning. I've seen you do it in others. It's not personal. I/we are simply trying to understand your position.

How long have we been providing aid to island nations? Would you expect to pay less over time? By now should these nations be becoming self-sufficient? To me it appears to be the opposite. They have become dependant. Ultimately, I forsee we will end up taking these people in any way, we are delaying the inevitable.

The amount of money is mind-boggling esp when so many things are supposedly in such poor condition here.

Yes you are correct I do have a short fuse when it comes to caring about the folks around us (i include our pacific neighbours) I spent over 25 years doing it for a job and voluntary work. I believe some folk here need to do some reading about NZ and its history and our history in Polynesia. I believe that some here cannot see beyond themselves and don't give a crap about others or they are simply trolling. I do not include you in that but you should look at the history of the region. The Colonial powers did a lot of damage in the islands as I believe the missionaries did also.

Yes there are very important wrongs that need to be righted here but there are also massive problems in the Islands for which NZ has a responsibility and not just because it feels good.

Explain why NZ has this responsibility?

I contend it has a responsibility to itself before all. How many mental health places would that money fund? How many houses would it build? How much transport improvement would it buy? How many teachers would it train? How many doctors? Tourism infrastructure to bring in income? Clean waterways? Water treatment and storage? School meals? I could go on....

There is an endless list of things that the thick end of a billion dollars of taxpayer cash would pay for here in NZ - so I for one will need a lot more convincing that "NZ has a responsibility" to explain why that money should be spent in foreign nations which are, as @networkn said, looking a lot more like dependencies than standalone nations.

The papers and their websites are on a race to the bottom. Yesterday, the Press paper version 'World' page had exactly 3 items all very brief. Half the page was taken up with a huge advertisement.

The small format paper idea is not exactly new. The Dominion tried it years ago. I remember it was a lot easier to read on the train.

I also see PB have a go at the minister in charge of ARTs and Culture as well as our regular hater for have a list of artists too much spare time on her hands according to PB Bit like some of you here. Being able to be critical of the state in a free and open way is part of what makes NZ what it is. People are allowed to air their grievances with the Govt. Long may it continue for anyone who feels the need to make use of it.

Happy for income tax to rise (as in, may a new tax bracket for the wealthy).

What about the not-so-wealthy? Oh, make the first few thousand they earn tax free.

The Government could also collect the same amount of tax and just give out less in non-means-tested State support like Super or the Baby Bonus or WFFTC. Funny how the CTU doesn't take that angle. Can't imagine why.
