The Independent: Trump can’t help himself: Experts warn ex-president is going to Truth Social himself into trouble

...Trump has already made gratuitous swipes at Judge Tanya Chutkan, the federal district judge overseeing his trial in Washington DC, and encouraged his allies in Congress to do the same. Judge Chutkan had already warned the Trump legal team about making statements that could affect the court’s ability to put on a fair trial before Mr Trump blasted her as being “very biased and unfair” in a Truth Social posting. And now, a woman has been arrested and charged with making threats against the DC-based judge.

“I caution you and your client to take special care in your public statements about this case,” Judge Chutkan said on Friday. “I will take whatever measures are necessary to safeguard the integrity of these proceedings.”

Legal experts who have been watching the various cases say that Trump is pushing firmly into the territory of speech that could affect the sanctity of his legal proceedings — something Judge Chutkan and her colleagues around the country will likely not abide.

“It would not surprise me if Judge Chutkan called a hearing, with Trump’s presence, given his new remarks,” wrote Neal Katyal, a lawyer with history arguing before the Supreme Court.

Some have speculated that Mr Trump is already pushing far into an area of leeway that Judge Chutkan is forced to give a presidential contender, given the especially sensitive idea of chilling or outright censoring the speech of a political candidate. But that leeway has limits, even for a former president.

“He has been getting some leeway, but ... the judicial system is not going to give him an infinite amount of patience as he behaves outrageously,” former White House ethics czar Norm Eisen told The Independent.

You can't rush these things ...

Reuters - Trump's lawyers propose 2026 trial date in federal election case

breaking

Aug 17 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Donald Trump on Thursday asked a federal judge in Washington to schedule an April 2026 trial for the former president, on federal charges that he allegedly sought to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

"The public interest lies in justice and fair trial, not a rush to judgment," Trump's attorneys wrote on Thursday.

This is a new definition of "the public interest".   🤨

"Rather than releasing the Report on the Rigged & Stolen Georgia 2020 Presidential Election on Monday, my lawyers would prefer putting this, I believe, Irrefutable & Overwhelming evidence of Election Fraud & Irregularities in formal Legal Filings," Trump said on Truth Social.

Therefore, he added, the news conference was no longer necessary.    😉

This is an unexpected development.  Has he listened to his lawyers for the first time in his life?

The Washington Post - Trump follows tested ‘counterpuncher’ playbook in face of indictments

17 Aug 23

The fourth felony indictment this year of the nation’s 45th president produced not a hint of humility or regret.

Rather, Trump reverted to the playbook that has guided his actions through six decades of investigations, lawsuits, bankruptcies, impeachments and titanic waves of allegations of wrongdoing. *

He went on the attack, taking the battle to his most comfortable venue, the public square.

Conceding error or seeking a compromise was never in the cards - not now and not at any point in Trump’s long life of huge successes, frequent failures and endless public drama. ...

Even when he knows he did something wrong, Trump said, “you have to go forward. And, you know, you can correct a mistake, but to look back and say, ‘Gee whiz, I wish I didn’t this or that,’ I don’t think that is good, and I don’t think in a certain way that is healthy.”

What counts as healthy for someone facing 91 felony allegations, four criminal trials and a host of civil proceedings varies from person to person, but Trump is the rare figure who has lived his life driven by the conviction that the proper response to, say, the threat of imprisonment is a frontal assault on the people in charge of determining his future.

* Trump and his businesses filed more than 1,900 lawsuits before he entered politics.

That process, known by the acronym DARVO (deny, attack, reverse roles of victim and offender) is the standard model for sociopaths (technically people with cluster B personality disorders, of which Trump's narcissism is one), so you're going to get that every time. They can't actually turn it off, which is why he keeps shooting himself in the foot publicly.

Aw, I was waiting for him to get absolutely roasted for whatever bs he could dream up over his vision of so-called "election fraud". Breitbart, et al would have been absolutely beside themselves had he done it.

As to him listening to his lawyer, he's never listened to anyone else in his life, so he's probably thinking "why change a winning formula"?

He said that to Melania when Eric was born, right?

This is a learning moment for Trump.

He should learn this new Russian phrase when he jumps bail after sentencing, and join his best bud, Putin.

English
"I decided not to do such a foolish thing."

Russian:
"Я решил не делать такую глупую вещь."
