The cynic in me thinks this was an orchestrated pan by all involved, to make his "Drain the Swamp" rhetoric seem more real.

It was a tweet from the President elect.

Americans I know are deeply embarrassed by Trump.

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for US Beef farmers to lobby (against McDonalds etc) to get Trump onto the idea that using NZ ground beef in burgers is un-American.

Chances are that of the ones you know, on average one in every 2 voted for him, so not that embarrassed.

I deal with a fair number of US based companies and staff from those, most days. Before the election very anti-Trump, after he elected, admitted they voted for him but didn't want to say so before the election for fear of the reaction.

Bottom line a LOT of Americans want what he is selling.

If I read between the lines on your comments on Beef, it feels like you would blame that on Trump too, though it wouldn't be him suggesting it. American beef farmers would have every right to lobby that Americans should use American Beef. It's good for us that we get to supply some.

It's also fairly amazing to me that most people here who are Anti-Trump (and I am hardly his biggest fan) are prepared to take everything BAD he says as face value, but nothing good at face value.

What are you trying to say there?

If Trump imposed a heavy duty on imported beef, that would be good because it met the lobbying demands of US beef farmers?

If that becomes accepted trade policy (globally - the US is still the world's largest trading nation) then take that to it's logical conclusion.

We should start building Trekkas in NZ, with your support lobbying NZ govt to impose heavy taxes on imported cars, that'll make NZ great again.

I thought we'd cleared up that misunderstanding much earlier in the thread.

To be fair, he could be suggesting that "Americans you know" could have twice the percentage of Trump supporters compared to the general voting population.

Personally, I don't think that's likely though.

Are most of your American friends uneducated poor white Evangelical Christians living in trailer parks?

Perhaps he genuinely cares. Perhaps he is trying to curry favor with them so they go easy on him. Hard to tell.

Yeh I would like to think he genuinely cares, perhaps he does, perhaps it makes him look good when he talks about draining the swamp. But that ethics committee decision by Trump was good IMO, he could have really easily done away with it and it probably wouldn't have affected his approval ratings in the slightest. Trumps biggest problem to laying out his own agenda is the GOP. They will butt heads.

If you read his second tweet, he makes it plain that it shouldn't be the first priority of the GOP to shut it down. Not that he didn't want it shut down.

This is the Office of Congressional Ethics. It does not apply to the President.

The Executive is under the Office of Government Ethics. Different thing OGE has made a few recommendations to Trump regarding his business interests. The OGE has praised Trump (on Twitter) in advance for saying he will divest some interests. I'm not sure if he has actually done it or if the office was praising for saying he will.

Edit: worth noting the OGE is actually a branch of the executive.
