It can help our pockets actually. If NZ promoted EV's, thats a fuel cost saving and a balance of payment benefit. As well, promote solar HW and PV, to move generation away from distributed to undistributed, that saves our power bills, it also reduces the load and allows homes and businesses to put back to the grid. Flow ons are moving from petrol mowers, hedge trimmers, other gadgets to electricity, which we can buy or generate ourselves. Ultimately that has to happen as oil has 50 years left. Probably a lot less as those devices that cannot run on electricity such as aircraft/ships will get priority so as to extend their use.

Probably only need one or two great big dirty ones, like Trump's America, or whoever it is in East Asia producing/releasing CFCs (which are powerful greenhouse gases - as well as destroying the ozone layer)

China is making decent effort into renewables/EVs/solar

Changing production levels is irrelevant to the real issue..., like most of this government's actions.

Changing production levels is irrelevant to the real issue..., like most of this government's actions.

If the only food and drink you make available is wheat and beer all that will be consumed is wheat and beer. Cutting supply of fossil fuel will lead to innovation and alternatives as exampled in the 70s during the oil shocks and the WW2. If the demand for EVs rise production ramps up and so does competition which inevitably brings price reductions.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Add to this the fact that most innovation in this area is already emerging from countries that have an ample supply of hydrocarbons at their disposal. These countries have much larger resources than NZ to fund such R&D.

What I'd like to see is the Government release their strategic plan which outlines how a ban on further exploration of hydrocarbons creates an economic environment that fosters innovation for alternative carbon-neutral fuels, along with their plans for transitioning the local economies which will be hit hardest.

Or perhaps talk to Exxon etc and get on and offshore drilling exploration ramped up big time, start fracking, so we can improve our economy and employment, and get those coal mines open casted while we are at it
