Appealing a New York civil case ppeal still means he's locking up a lot of his assets.

The New York laws around civil case appeals, like a lot of US states, requires a bond to prevent dead-beats from appealing ,attempting to pervert justice.

Trump's not the first dead-beat to try an appeal; and he ain't going to be the last dead-beat to try.

And remember, in the US, politicians are the best money can buy. The politician can spend the most on his campaign is almost certainly the winner. Any bonds will be directly competing with his presidential run for funds.

There's already rumors that no bondmen will touch, due to Trump's unrealistic valuations. So it's likely he'll be selling a large chunk, if not all, of stocks and bonds at the very least (was worth $400 million).

ABC News: After his latest court ruling, Trump could now face $540 million in fines. Does he have the money to pay?
...
While Trump's donors have largely footed the bill for his campaign expenses -- with Trump's political committee spending more than $50 million on his campaign in 2023 -- the legal cases present a stickier challenge for Trump, who has built a reputation around his wealth. Courts allow defendants multiple mechanisms to collect damages, including liens and wage garnishments, and the fines are not dischargeable through traditional protections like bankruptcy.

Multiple legal experts who ABC News spoke with suggested that Trump is unlikely to front the fines immediately, and will instead opt to delay any payment using a bond secured by his assets until after he exhausts his appeal options.

"You can post the full amount yourself or you can get a bond posted by a third party," according to former federal prosecutor Josh Naftalis. "You can kind of think of it as insurance, with a third party on the hook and you pay a portion."

So if he doesn't front up with the amount or even the bond (how much is the bond anyway? 10%?) what happens next? I know he would never publicly admit this in a million years, but pretend he says "I don't have the money", does he head off to jail, or...?

And I'm not sure he can overturn this one even if he's President as it's not a federal charge.

I learned some new slang, from a Republican describing Trump:

If I'm reading the New York law correctly, Trump could face up to 4 years in prison for refusing to pay after 30 days.

Additionally I suppose if that's not enough, Judge Engoron could hold him in contempt, which I believe is both conditional and open-ended jail term: "while you don't pay, you'll sit in jail"

It would be interesting to see how the Secret Service would react if U.S. Marshalls showed up to force Trump's return to New York.

I can't imagine Trump's very popular with them. He calls his Secret Service chief 'Dumbo' because of his large ears.

Judge Engoron gets insulted frequently, and the judge even imposed a gag order to stop the judge's staff from being threatened. There's an unwritten rule: "Don't piss off the judge."

so payback might be a bitch.

It is a state law, so no President current or future can pardon a prison term.

New York Times : What the Civil Fraud Ruling Means for Trump’s Finances and His Empire
...
How will he pay the $450 million?

Mr. Trump has 30 days to come up with the money or secure a bond.

A company providing a bond will essentially assure the State of New York that Mr. Trump has the money to pay the judgments. The bond will prevent authorities from collecting while his appeals are heard.

However, Mr. Trump must find a company willing to write the bond as he faces a wide range of legal problems, including a separate $83.3 million judgment in a recent defamation case. A bonding company will charge a premium and could demand that Mr. Trump pledge cash and other liquid assets as collateral.

In recent years, Mr. Trump has amassed a stockpile of cash, but the judge’s ruling puts that at risk. Between the defamation case judgment and the $450 million he owes after Justice Engoron’s ruling, Mr. Trump might run out of cash.

That does not mean he will run out of money. He can sell one of his properties or seek a new mortgage to raise cash.

freitasm: The Grift never ends https://www.gofundme.com/f/stand-with-trump-raise-the-settlement

I wonder if the MAGA crowd might finally realise this is nothing more than a grift to either keep him from paying the fine, or to get them to pay it for him. I mean, really, how many frikken' donations can they afford? Everywhere has a cost of living crisis at the moment, and remember he's meant to be a billionaire (apparently 🙄), so he should be able to afford to pay for all this himself, right?

Also, some of the comments on that page are absolutely hilarious 😄

Not sure how long it will live as it's against the ToS: "the legal defense of alleged financial and violent crimes;"

I assume the Secret Service still has to comply with lawful orders and wouldn't be able to prevent the Marshalls from taking Trump into custody. How far they could accompany him, I don't know. Into jail? Who knows, but it could be a boring shift for a secret service agent sitting on a stool outside Trump's cell, sliding a tray of cold watery soup to him through the slot in the door at lunchtime.

Even if it stays up, he's going to need a tonne of donations to make $355m. It's almost $1 for every person in the US - and there is no way in hell that all of them support him. He's definitely no Reagan in 1984.
