Of all the unusual aspects of the Donald Trump phenomenon, the one I find the most perplexing is the zeal with which his supporters continue to send him money.

Federal campaign finance reports, released last week for the second half of 2023, show that they’re often working-class or retired folks who engage in what amounts to a near-daily Trump tithing, often in $5 or $10 increments. ...

These appeals really work, even as they become more untethered from reality. Trump’s various PACs and committees raised nearly $200 million last year, with earlier estimates that 80 percent of it came from people giving less than $200 at a time.

The problem is that huge amounts of Trump’s campaign accounts are being spent on legal fees (nearly 50 different law firms got paid), as well as ludicrous expenditures like an $18,000-per-month retainer for Melania Trump’s clothing stylist. ...

Given how much of it is funneled into Trump’s lifestyle and lawyers who don’t seem to know what they’re doing, it’s plain we’ve long since departed the realm of politics.

It’s a mass confidence game.

And for far too long, the authorities never proved him wrong.

And so, throughout the 1990s and into the current century, the pattern continued. Trump exaggerated his assets. James’ investigation concluded that he had cheated his business partners. He walked away from contractual obligations. He created an entire university based on fraudulently preying on low-income students seeking a better life. And nothing happened to him that would actually change his behavior.

Maybe true but he would still be prosecuted for it and in all likelihood jailed for it.

I don't know; didn't she say last week that she would pardon Trump if he was convicted? That makes her as bad as the rest, if outwardly less insane.

EDIT to add: "As bad as the rest" because this is effectively the same as saying the President has unlimited immunity to do crimes.

All you have to do is make sure your crimes ensure that if anyone succeeds you, they are an ally, and you will be pardoned. If you commit a bunch of crimes and don't succeed in making sure your successor is an ally then you're literal dead meat anyway because you've already destroyed any fig leaf over the dictatorship. If your successor is an enemy then their first crime will be to get rid of you.

He had a few notable quotes, although a lot of the more Stalinesque things ascribed to him he never actually said, the tragedy vs.statistic one being one famous example, which is why I added one more to the list of things he didn't say. But stuff like "In the Soviet army it takes more courage to retreat than advance" and the one about education being a weapon were his.

Or at least someone wrote them for him and he made them his.
