I agree US diplomacy is as destructive as a Bull in a China shop. My wife is going to that region on business in a few weeks and it worries the heck out of me.

You worry too much. At least if something happens to the US they have a big military machine to defend themselves with.

Sometimes I worry about NZ being a sitting little duck, with absolutely no form of real defense.

The fact that the US has a lot of big ships in the area that go around bashing into random things doesn't fill me with confidence either. Fortunately the Chinese have better discipline and a rational leader. Being part of a small country with no military to speak of is a good thing since no-one will see us as a target. Your wife would have a lot more to worry about if she visited any city in America.

No, this is not the start of things. The Japanese government issued a civilian alert, but they apparently made no attempt to shoot it down. Unless an armed missile unequivocally aimed at Japan (or Korea) lands there, I don't expect anyone to kick off a war, because although it's dangerous, it's a lot less dangerous than a war would be. South Korean soldiers are killed by North Koreans every year or two, and they haven't started WWIII over it yet.

It's got to come to a head eventually, but not today.

Agree it's not the start of anything. It's a more of a continuation. They performed a lot more tests in this area in 2009:

Edit: I disagree on anything coming to a head. It is not necessary that this series has to come to any kind confrontation.

I don't mean this series, I mean North Korea in general. Sooner or later something is going to happen that will start a war. It could be a famine, it could be Donald Trump reacting badly to a tweet about his tiny hands, it could be that the old hardliners stage a coup and march off to gloriously reunify with the filthy capitalists, or it might be that Kim does it in order to avoid a coup from the old hardliners.

There are lots of ways it could go horribly wrong. I just don't see it happening this time, that's all. Kim is in no way a nice person. But his goal is to die of diabetes, not vapourisation.

NK's nuclear program needs to be stopped. It needs to happen quickly, and swiftly.

If its left to continue, the threat will just get worse and continue to grow, with even more dire end consequences. IMO its been left far too long and something should have been done ages ago.

My real concern is not really NK, or even possibly bombing them into submission (This is going to happen eventually), I am more concerned about China and their reaction to any form of attack. When war does break out, its going to be Americas war but again very far from America (how convenient). I feel countries in the pacific will be much more vulnerable than even the USA. NZ and Australia are going to have to play their cards very carefully. Forming allies with the wrong nations can prove devastating if war breaks out with China.

I agree with Mike. The US needs to stay out of it. However, China bears a large part of the blame for this situation. Their desire to not have US bases on their doorstep is somewhat understandable, but allowing the Kim family to run things the way they wanted has caused the situation to fester. Not that the Chinese Communist government is a paradise of transparency and fairness, but things would be both much better for the people of North Korea and for global stability if the Chinese had kicked out the Kims and installed a more normal government instead at the end of the Korean War.

Now, there are no good options left. If NK stays as it is, millions are repressed into abject poverty and slavery so that fat boy can have his cigars and gold leaf TP, all while they slowly but surely get their doomsday weapons working.

However, I disagree that if the US backs off, the North Koreans will nuke them. Kim isn't suicidal. He knows that if he actually hits anything the US values then he will be dead inside a week as no less than five countries with satellite surveillance, long range precision weapons, and highly trained special forces teams compete to be the first to put a bullet in him. He doesn't want to die like that. He wants to die fat and happy. Preferably old, but definitely fat.
