Geektastic:

"Let's get on with the election and hope that whoever wins has the balls to actually do something other than wring their hands and talk."

(edit - not your words - but quote from UK news media)

And do what - precisely?

Turning response to these events into political p*ssing contests won't solve it.

It's clear to me that you have a particular solution in mind. I'm thinking it's very similar to the solution proposed by the guy shown attending this Gerry Adams fundraiser in 1995. 10-15 seconds in:

I think a lot of Americans thought the IRA were just lovable rogues and terrorism wasn't a real issue, before 9-11.  I hadn't realised that Trump had been a supporter, but he's so unpredictable, nothing should be a surprise.

I wish I knew what the solution was.  I don't think it is vigils and facebook profile backgrounds, nor do I think it is allowing further Islamification of Western society.  I did over twenty years in the UK military while the IRA were a persistent threat to service personnel and I'm glad to be in a peaceful place like NZ now.  I don't think we need to be importing (literally) middle eastern societal problems into our community.

That would have been after the 1995 framework agreement. But as you say, American support for the IRA was consistent in one form or another for a long time. It's possible he was a supporter prior to that. He does seem to have a good seat there.

Perpetrator said to have called a TV station and said Isis and Al Qaeda at the same time. It's all over. Female hostage rescued. Attacker dead. Possibly one more person dead. The scene was an apartment complex. Sounds more like a domestic or some kind of relationship event.

Without in any way wanting to minimise the tragedy of those affected by these terrible events, here is a brief John Oliver clip that puts some perspective back into things.

I like John Oliver, I find him funny most of the time, however, I thought he took this too far. There are a lot of frightened people in Britian right now.

Also, his recent attack on Trump was bordering on ... something others would get sacked for. Not quite Kathy Griffen bad, but bad. Not funny.

I am no fan of Trump, but some of the stuff going on is completely over the top.

Not necessarily.
it's now being treated as a probable terrorist event.

It fits with ISIS strategy targeting "lone wolf" and small groups to act independently.  Of course, of those that believe the propaganda and follow the instructions, many will be mentally unstable - so determining whether it's a "real" terrorist attack or "just a regular" lunatic isn't going to be easy.

It is exactly the kind of thing ISIL has been suggesting as tactic recently.  Of course they claim responsibility. Hostage-taking - as it's if "well carried out" is capable of staying on the front page much longer.

Another suggested tactic (in Rumiyah) is even more sinister - encouraging serial murder - befriending people, inviting them home, then killing them, one after the other.

No sane person could read ISIL propaganda without being convinced that they're entirely 100% evil. That leaves the insane - "dangerous zealot nutters".  Probably why the recent terror attacks *haven't been very successful - they're being carried out by people who can't organise their own thoughts.  (*this said without meaning to downplay / understate the impact and horror of recent events).

Really? That's not the vibe I get of London at the moment. People are stick of it and vigilant, but I'm not sure they are frightened, as much as the media like to portray that.

That's not clever at all.  It's stupid bigoted rubbish.  Shame.
