quickymart:

Slate took a look at exactly this (third-party candidates) recently:

Yep if you look at the polls state by state the individual is putting Joe just behind, although the primary is even with a big up swing for smoking Joe.

But still, it would be ironic for the US to vote for more democracy but it ends up giving them anything but....

That is why Im wondering whats the quick summary of the Federal and State legal cases?

Good to see the experts on cognition coming out spelling out the ironic reality, but US media needs every voter to understand what it means.

Ty very much.

So just skimming that, if he can now appear on the ballots, and a person can be president from behind bars or "they" can push the cases out beyond Nov, are these cases now irrelevant to elections?

I saw a big upswing for Joe since his SOU speech in one of the candidate versus polls, but if they go ahead with a ban of a certain SM platform, that could play right into the hands of the Repub rep, who would probably giggle given "they" may likely have had a similar bill in mind. Sometimes doing what you think is the right thing, is strategically the wrong thing?

I know the Election and the Cases are different topics, but they did seem linked for a period by virtue that the cases could impact the persons ability in the election, until I skimmed that summary (ie quite possible no verdict until passed elections), unless Ive missed something. What a mess.

I'm guessing in USA for these cases
- A ruling after an election impacts only a future election.
- A ruling with an implication that a past election was not legal seems unlikely.
- and even less likely is a ruling that a president must stand down and be replaced by the vice
- and less likely again, an election rerun

The Independent: Rudy Giuliani’s creditors want to force him to sell his Florida condo

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani could be forced by creditors to sell his Florida condo to pay off his massive debts.

The Committee of Unsecured Creditors – which represents individuals and entities to whom Mr Giuliani owes money or soon could — has filed a motion in bankruptcy court asking the court to compel the former mayor to sell his Florida condo.

Mr Giuliani valued his home in Palm Beach at $3.5m in previous court filings. It is his “second most valuable asset reported,” the filing states.
...
The committee is also requesting that Mr Giuliani obtain homeowner’s insurance — which he has admitted he does not have for either property.

A “failure to maintain appropriate homeowners insurance puts the estate at great risk,” the filing says.

Despite not finding “sufficient funds to purchase homeowners insurance”, the former spent more than $26,000 in the month of January alone, the lawyers wrote.
...
The committee is “discussing” whether to force Mr Giuliani to sue Donald Trump, his former client, for an alleged $2 million in unpaid legal fees. The committee is considering compelling the former mayor to bring litigation against Mr Trump, the Trump campaign, and/or the Republican National Committee.

The man formerly known as “America’s Mayor” filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2023 after a massive defamation verdict that ordered him to pay more than $148m to a pair of election workers he falsely accused of manipulating votes in Georgia.

The fatal thing about democracy is that the vote of an idiot weighs just as much as the vote of a Harvard professor. Add to this political distortions and misinformation through social media and we have a starting position that absolutist systems have only ever dreamed of.

I was surprised to see Trump ranting against Facebook. It was a big part of getting him elected in 2016:

DailyMail: Trump says Facebook should ALSO be banned if TikTok bill passes and the app is 'taken out' in the Senate: Ex-president says Meta is a 'great threat to democracy'

'TIKTOK IS LESS OF A DANGER TO THE USA THAN META (FACEBOOK!), WHICH IS A TRUE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform

Oh. Trump owns a rival social network. The article also mentions Trump's claim that Zuckerberg interfered in the 2020 election that Trump claims Trump won causing Trump to actually lose.

A surety bond for US $92 million will have a non-refundable fee, upwards of 20%. The terms of this bond are unknown.

The rape victim E. Jean Carroll is guaranteed the full if Trump loses his appeal; Chubb's on the hook for the full amount. If Trump wins his appeal he'll lose the large fee.

On a related topic, while Trump isn't a "convicted rapist", he is an "adjudicated rapist"

In general, a judge has not entered a rape conviction on Trump's criminal record.

But Trump has been found guilty of rape. An adjudicated rapist is much like a convicted rapist, but the consequences are lesser. Trump is technically not a convicted rapist, even though he has been found guilty of rape.

An adjudicated felony is often the result of a plea deal, but not in Trump's case.

CNBC: Chubb CEO defends backing Trump appeal bond in E. Jean Carroll case

The CEO of the Chubb insurance company defended a subsidiary providing former President Donald Trump with a $91.6 million appeal bond in the case where he was found liable for defaming E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of rape.

“As the surety, we don’t take sides,” CEO Evan Greenberg wrote. “It would be wrong for us to do so and we are in no way supporting the defendant.”

Greenberg was appointed by Trump as a member of the then-president’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations in October 2018.

The good thing about democracy is that the vote of a Harvard professor weighs just as much as the vote of an idiot. Even idiots can be persuaded by truth, and if enough Harvard professors band together to explain in idiot language why something is important, enough idiots may listen to the argument and do the thing that benefits everyone. Without democracy any idiot can take charge and dictate policy. With democracy there is a mechanism to hold idiots to account.

There is little difference between the two of them in 2024.

I think that might be unrelated to Trump. Feel free to post in an existing open thread related to the topic you want to discuss. I can take a guess that might be the "Israel & Middle East 2023" thread still running.

Anyway.. back to the topic:

You know exactly how it was meant. By idiot I didn't mean a person who is not over-intelligent but of good will. By idiot, I mean people who make the same mistake two or three times and are unable to learn. In that case, I prefer the expertise of a professor.

Ever since Florida Governor DeSantis announced that he's going to release sex offender Epstein documents, Trump has instantly increased his attacks DeSantis. Trump was really foul mouthed during Ohio speech.

Politico: Florida Governor DeSantis to sign off on releasing more sex offender Epstein documents

Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign legislation in Palm Beach this morning to release state grand jury records of an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender and financier who killed himself in jail.

The bill is one of the few agenda items DeSantis has enthusiastically pledged to sign, without being prompted
...
The legislation would open access to investigations and testimonies from more than 20 years ago, when Palm Beach authorities first investigated Epstein for allegedly sexually abusing minors. The case was referred to a grand jury and culminated in Epstein getting a deal in which he avoided federal charges or extensive time in federal prison.

Overseeing the agreement was then-federal prosecutor Alex Acosta, who would later go on to be labor secretary in the Trump administration. Acosta resigned his secretary role amid outcry over the Epstein investigation reported extensively in the Miami Herald.
