kingdragonfly: Ever since Florida Governor DeSantis announced that he's going to release sex offender Epstein documents, Trump has instantly increased his attacks DeSantis. Trump was really foul mouthed during Ohio speech.

I guess at least with Epstein he didn't try and whip out the old "I don't/didn't know him" deflection line. Pretty hard to pull that one of when there are multitudes of photos with the two of you grinning like morons together.

https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/03/18/poll-conviction-trump-2024-elections-00147338 >> some interesting poll results around Trump and his pending court cases, and what any convictions might do to his standing.

A whopping 70 percent of the country rejects Trump’s claim that presidents should be immune from prosecution for alleged crimes they committed while in office.

I guess that would be the MAGA crowd then. But do they really only number 30%?

Somewhere around that figure has always been my understanding. Which is why I have been, and continue to be, extremely dubious about Trump's chances of winning another election.

The NY Times - Trump Spurned by 30 Companies as He Seeks Bond in $454 Million Judgment

18 March 2024

Donald J. Trump’s lawyers disclosed on Monday that he had failed to secure a roughly half-billion dollar bond in his civil fraud case in New York, raising the prospect that the state could seek to freeze some of his bank accounts and seize some of his marquee properties.

The court filing, coming one week before the bond is due, suggested that the former president might soon face a financial crisis unless an appeals court comes to his rescue.

Mr. Trump has asked the appeals court to pause the $454 million judgment that a New York judge imposed on Mr. Trump in the fraud case last month, or accept a bond of only $100 million.

Otherwise, the New York attorney general’s office, which brought the case, might soon move to collect from Mr. Trump.

He'd simply state "Fake News" - "Deep Fakes" and the MAGAts would lap it up.

If I went to a bar, and got rejected by 30 women, I might wonder "wow, what's wrong with me?"

I guess in Trump's case, it's not him, but a personal assistance getting rejected 30 times. So he probably trash talked and fired the personal assistant.

Still funny how a billionaire is having so much problems with bondsmen. :)

It's like people have seen how much he's lied, seen how much fraud he's committed, seen how toxic his relationships are, and want nothing to do with him.

It's the size of the bond that is the problem. Only a very few companies would provide such a large bond.

Probably more pertinently - because they are businesses who really only care about money rather than whether their clients are morally above reproach - this judgement ruled as a matter of fact that Trump committed fraud massively overvaluing his properties. Since it's 100% guaranteed he will lose his appeal, it's also 100% guaranteed they would need to pay out. He never pays his bills, which in turn means they would need security. But all his properties are probably mortgaged past the eyeballs, and are not worth a fraction of that amount.

So, practically speaking, there is no security that Trump can provide. That means any bond company is guaranteed to lose their money, and that is why they won't stump for him.

Presumably Chubb got at least some sort of unencumbered security for their smaller bond - but also the CEO is beholden to Trump so he may well have taken a much higher risk than he really should have. We will likely not know until Trump loses and Chubb try to collect, and hope that whatever happens there leaks out.

Reuters -  Trump loses bid to block Michael Cohen, Stormy Daniels testimony at hush money trial

NEW YORK, March 18 (Reuters) - Donald Trump on Monday lost a bid to block testimony from Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels at his upcoming trial on charges stemming from hush money that Cohen, his former lawyer and fixer, paid Daniels, a porn star, before the 2016 election.

Trump last month asked Justice Juan Merchan to block their testimony, arguing Cohen had a history of lying and would likely lie again, and that Daniels - whose real name is Stephanie Clifford - would seek to use the trial to monetize her story. ...

[Trump] has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up his reimbursement of Cohen for the payment to Daniels for her silence about a sexual encounter she says she had with Trump in 2006. Trump denies an encounter.

The Washington Post -  Trump has a bunch of new false claims. Here’s a guide.

14 March 2024

[headings only]

Rather than repeat ourselves, we are going to focus on new false claims that Trump has introduced to his repertory in recent months :

  • Biden was declared ‘incompetent’ to stand trial in his documents case

  • The United States is a Third World country

  • Prisons are being emptied around the world to flood U.S. borders

  • Congo has released murderers into the United States

  • 15 million migrants have entered the United States under Biden

  • The inflation rate under Biden is 50 percent [and was nil under Trump]

  • Native-born Americans have lost 1 million jobs to immigrants

To be fair to the guy item 2 is correct. Only in a third world country would someone like Trump be able to run for President.

Trump: “In February alone, nearly 1 million jobs held by native-born Americans disappeared. Think of that. You lost a million jobs. Black people, that’s who lost the jobs. Hispanic people, that’s who lost the jobs.”

Funny how the trend seem to be started under Republicans Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, and continued at the same rate under Trump.

Maybe he's thinking about native-Americans losing their jobs when the Pilgrims showed up.

In 1607, when England sent its Pilgrims, they're not sending their best. They're sent Pilgrims that have lots of problems, and they brought those problems with them. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some Pilgrims, I assume, are good people.

kingdragonfly: (with some correction)

In 1905, when Germany sent the Trumps (by designation), they're not sending their best. They're sent people that have lots of problems, and they brought those problems with them.

We should have just kept them here. 😉
