The NY Times - Trump May Owe $100 Million From Double-Dip Tax Breaks, I.R.S. Audit Shows  [ unlocked link ]

11 May 2024

Former President Donald J. Trump used a dubious accounting maneuver to claim improper tax breaks from his troubled Chicago tower, according to an Internal Revenue Service inquiry uncovered by The New York Times and ProPublica.

Losing a years-long audit battle over the claim could mean a tax bill of more than $100 million.

The 92-story, glass-sheathed skyscraper along the Chicago River is the tallest and, at least for now, the last major construction project by Mr. Trump.

Through a combination of cost overruns and the bad luck of opening in the teeth of the Great Recession, it was also a vast money loser.

But when Mr. Trump sought to reap tax benefits from his losses, the I.R.S. has argued, he went too far and in effect wrote off the same losses twice. ...

This is a long and detailed article, requiring a knowledge of tax matters that I do not have.

I would be interested in the opinion of someone who knows more about high finance - note the free link.  🙄

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/trumps-stormy-daniels-cross-examination

Some interesting analysis from The Bulwark on Trump's defense team tactics this week. I especially enjoyed this part:

For Trump, it must have been excruciating to have the world hear that it wasn’t his charm that got him what he wanted from Daniels that evening in his hotel room. Even though she did not say that he forced her, she testified to being startled at seeing him suddenly in his underwear when she emerged from a restroom visit, the hotel room spinning, and his looming physical presence when she went for the door. No wonder Trump was heard cursing during her testimony.

Trump reportedly kept elbowing [his lawyer Susan] Necheles to object when her trial experience had her refraining. Nonetheless, she did as instructed.

But yet later the judge told her that she didn't object enough? 😃

It's a pity John Heartfeld isn't around today, he'd have a field day with Trump.

Big Oil has been rightly described as the new Big Tobacco.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

The NY Times - Michael Cohen Was Paid to Fix Trump’s Problems. Now He’s One of Them.

12 May 2024

Donald J. Trump has always surrounded himself with lawyers - all types of lawyers.

There are the television-friendly talking heads. The polished criminal practitioners. The pit-bull litigators, the corporate suits and the legal advisers with their own legal troubles.

And then there was the singular Michael D. Cohen, lawyer by trade and enforcer by nature. With the loyalty of a surrogate son, he kept Mr. Trump’s secrets and cleaned up his messes. He was the fixer.

This week, however, Mr. Cohen is poised to unfix Mr. Trump’s life.

When he takes the stand as a vital witness at Mr. Trump’s criminal trial in Manhattan, Mr. Cohen will unearth some of the secrets he buried, revealing a mess that prosecutors say his former boss was desperate to hide. ...

EDIT :  Cohen acknowledged in his memoir that he had been Trump’s “designated thug.”

I seem to recall another infamous person in relatively recent history who espoused the theory about telling a lie often enough till people believe it.

I thought this was quite amusing too - one of Trump's more crooked friends tries to upsell his rally in New Jersey, only to get fully owned by Twitter:

He was, however, much, much better at it than Trump.  They spent an enormous amount of time testing different ways to say things, mannerisms, clothing styles (and I mean everything, google his name and "lederhosen", not a good look), everything was carefully choreographed and managed.  Trump just wears the same suit and long red tie each time and then stands up and wings it delivering a confused muddle while believing he's a great orator.

Eh, I certainly I can't imagine General Hux riffing on a Trump speech.

The low-class New Jersey beach reminds me that Trump is just a carnival barker, and not even a good one.

The Washington Post - How did we end up with a Biden-Trump matchup again?

06 May 2024

How we got Biden

He’s the current president, and most presidents seek reelection.

He’s 81 and already the oldest president ever.

Democrats buy the argument that Biden is their best candidate to defeat Trump. After all, he beat him in 2020.

Plus, no big names in Democratic politics were willing to challenge him.

How we got Trump

Trump is on the ballot again because he is really popular with Republican voters.

Trump is also the former president, so he’s as well-known as Biden and has a record to run on.

He’s been polling pretty much even with Biden - or even ahead of him - in the early days of the campaign.

But he does have serious weaknesses that Republican leaders are worried about: He could be a convicted criminal by the election.

Who will win?

The election between these two unpopular politicians is expected to be close.

Political strategists think whoever turns out more voters this time around is going to win.

Roger Stone makes me think that if Trump hadn't pardoned him, all the sisters in his prison would have been staring into the face of Richard Nixon every time they banged him. Would this have made things better or worse?
