@Pumpedd It has nothing to do with TV channels.

Labour used "tax cuts" as a pejorative.

National used "tax cuts" as an enticement.

Both parties used the term inappropriately.

Who cares what is was or wasn't called. To those that were to receive the increased take home pay with no increase in gross income thus paying less tax  it was a tax cut.

Well, I applaud the Government banning strikes etc during bargaining. It's a good move.  I am not as thrilled about the other parts of the "fair pay" initiative. I'm going to reserve judgement on this.

Perhaps Ardern's govt could lead by example on the fair pay front starting with nurses and teachers. As a bonus they would make a significant dent in the so-called gender pay gap.

With what money?

Budget is spent.

Fair pay is a good thing. As for strikes, I am not a fan but they are sometimes needed. I am equally not a fan of lockouts.

I have no idea.  Not my problem to solve.  I didn't seek and win the govt benches.  If I did I would have had a plan to walk the talk.

But I do seriously think that before focussing on private sector employers, govt should get its own house in order.

A number of sectors in which people are chronically underpaid tend to be govt funded or operated.  They also tend to be sectors where the work force is predominantly female.  Examples include education, health and elder care.  Those sectors include large numbers of people on poverty wages.

NB: I'm not blaming the Ardern govt for this.  It's been happening for decades.

The cries from those who support 'the poor', have already begun. People already living right on the edge can't afford to find an extra $15 to fill the tank each week.

How does $0.115 per litre tax = an "extra $15 to fill the tank each week"?

People living on the edge use 130 litres of petrol a week?

People living on the edge would have had their tax cut by now. An average wage earner would have been receiving a tax cut of $1060 a year.

A tax cut when education and health were left behind? Yep, ok. #itsallaboutme

Look, I know you love your personal tax cuts. I do too, more money for me. id rather those that need it, get it. Id rather money the Govt can spare goes to the needy, which is poor people, health and education, rather than saving it up to have a surplus and rock star economy. Analogolise a house. Why maintain it when I can build up my bank account? That will cost big time.

I rarely visit this vent thread, the more people that are not tied to the hip to a party, the better. You can argue that National saved and didnt spend, you can argue that Labs will throw it all away on benefits. There are pros and cons both ways, debate that.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Which tax cut is this? As Labour cancelled Nationals planned tax cuts.

Nationals tax cut would have come into affect in April 2018. Labour canned it.

Labour is all about giving money to us. But they didnt. Why is that?

Let's stop referring to them as "Tax Cuts" shall we?

No rate of tax was being cut.  All that was happening was a threshold adjustment to the lowest two tax brackets.

(Something that Labour-led governments appear to be ideologically opposed to.  So much so that we're very nearly at the point where someone on the average wage is paying tax in the highest tax bracket!)

So, to be clear,  Labour didn't campaign to abolish National's "Tax Cuts"...   they campaigned to reverse the income bracket adjustments.

Ok

Threshold creep is a problem, we can all agree on that. I cannot recall any National or Labour Govt that adjusted threshold creep on an annual basis.

National campaigned on tax cuts, not reducing threshold creep, correct? Labour, who traditionally take the money and give it away to beneficiaries and the poor, campaigned that we cannot afford tax cuts, as these give tax cuts to those that dont need it. Possibly both you and me. I dont see an issue with that. Latterly, the budget shows good numbers, but no wholesale give to away to get votes syndrome. They are taking on the conservative view, the money is there, lets see how it goes, aka National. Its not the Left vs Right of the 1970's. Both are central.

Enticement aka vote buying, is inappropriate.

Pejorative is disapproval, that seems appropriate.

Agree. Ive seen things I like about both sides and dont like. What I see as a fence observer is that both are central. Its more about management, than blue vs red. I see on the news tonight just now that Jim Bolger is on one of the working groups. I like that. Too often its ONLY about politics, it needs to be about NZ. However, when vote day looms......

Its not spent, they had plenty, but chose to be conservative and spread it out. Thats seems ok, although Im not a teacher or nurse.

Sounds to me that you the put spending on needy/health and education a higher priority than having a good economy? A surplus and rock star economy allows for all of that. Take that away and where are you going to find the money for all that welfare? Surely a rock star economy is one of the most important things this government should be aiming for?

The end of labour/socialist governments normally always end when the money dries up. This goverment really does not look any different.

Labour spending conservatively? Is that a joke?

Seems that jacinda condones vote buying actually. The much-loved bribe-o-meter shows the leading contenders for the "vote buying" spot are...

NZ First and Labour. Of course this was published before the election. Afterwards, as we all know, feelings or mutuality stemming from their shared lover of 'vote-buying' led them to form a coalition....

Also, oddly given the pink stripe that seems to run through NZ, there is no 0% allowance at the beginning.

I was just dealing with some UK tax matters for my father's estate and the personal allowance is about $25,000 per annum before you pay tax.

It would probably be easier than taking the money and giving it back.
