Apparently unnecessary - "Bikers for Trump" claim that they've got 5000 members who'll be there to provide a "wall of meat" to "help" keep protesters in order.

Well that brings me great comfort. undecided

I hope there won't be violence.

I don't have optimism that America could come of of a really nasty Trump experience united.  IMO Obama was probably as good as it could ever get in terms of an intelligent, eloquent, respectful, well-reasoned voice for uniting America (and that after turmoil of the GFC, post 9/11 etc - things were genuinely not very good in very serious ways when he was appointed).

Then look what's happened.

imo Trump has incited the violence on a regular basis.

Only a few days now until we see just what kind of a man Trumpy and his team prove to be.

It's a very strange world, IMO, where optimists and supporters are hoping that "things probably won't be as bad <as Trump promised>".

It will be 2 weeks or so before we get a feel. Its not about the talk, its about the action, or the promises of action, but his promises dont carry any weight based on what Ive seen so far.

I'll put my hand up that it won't be as bad. Too much talk, too little action, GOP will wantg to manage him through topics he has no experience with

The buck stops on the 20th, talk dont matter no more!

Talk matters a whole lot, especially if you are President. Markets rise and crash just on a sentence from the President.

Yes, that can and will happen, as will his off the cuff ramblings that the CIA have ticked him off about. But its merely loudmouth talk, not real talk, not from a real man, with real knowledge and real power. His talk is heavily laden with secret laughter from those abroad. The extent that markets will react will soon temper to murmurs as its all bluster.

He managed to wipe several billion dollars off the value of the German auto industry yesterday:

The Independent: “I would tell BMW that if you are building a factory in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the USA, without a 35 per cent tax, then you can forget that,” Trump said, adding that carmakers will instead have to build plants in the US.

The amount wiped is around 1-2% of cap. It's a significant event but not particularly large percentage wise. It does show the kind of influence that his statements have.

BMW is not currently changing position. They will bet it is unlikely.

I dont get your point. My stance is that he is all talk and no action. He can talk and cause shareholders to sell up, thats fine. Not great, but its not the end of the world. His stance on taxes isn't new. There will be stocks that rise on the coat tails of his ranting. My issue is action. Not talk. He is just talk. My stance is he has no action to offer.

Is it wrong of me to recall that time when the Rolling Stones hired the Hell's Angels to provide security at one of their concerts?

An article on the role of books in Obama's life and Presidency

Not that an article like this will matter to the many uneducated idiots who voted for Trump but it is actually incredibly revealing. Here's a person who obviously has to work incredibly hard, make tough decisions, and endure a  degree of being "peppered" by others during his days choosing to freely seek out more perspectives of others via a wide range of reading. It demonstrates an obvious understanding of the person's own epistemic limitations and finding fulfilment from learning. This is in diametric opposition to idiot Trump who apparently believes that he is and has the solution to everything, that everything is simple, and an answer is never further away than the next glib one-liner. Oh and who can ever forget his numerous incredible declarations on how he knows so much more on [insert anything] than the relevant experts?

Makes me sad the US has a 2 term limit.

And he's going to be replaced by a moron.

The whole "Change" thing he promised probably would've happened if the GOP weren't a bunch of complete tools with no compassion towards human life (unless you're rich and white).

That's ok. I hear he's knocking down the statue of liberty and putting up one of himself in its place.

Donald Trump tells Times of London his first "work day" will be Monday after the Inauguration. He's taking the Saturday and Sunday off.

The guy is a joke.

And now terrorists and North Korea know he's a 9-5, 5 days a week president.

I bet they're stoked!  *groan*

*Russia probably already knew.

No - it's fascinating:

He can absolutely do what he threatens - impose tariffs on imports - without congressional approval.

GW Bush did it in 2002 with steel.  That was taken to the WTO who found against the US, Bush ignored the ruling.  It was reversed only when the EU threatened retaliatory tariffs against the US - those targeted specifically to disrupt US exports from marginal Republican states.

You underestimate the danger Trump poses IMO, and given his petulant vindictive nature, perhaps overestimate the ability of the GOP to rein him in.

When (I think it's inevitable) they do try to curtail his extremes - then IMO that's when he's going to be most dangerous - a spoiled child used to getting his own way facing discipline.  Tantrum time.
