He's not LGBTQ+ is he?  There was... quite a bit of text covering that, with a worrying "could get worse in the future" attached to some of it.

No, but I'm just paranoid that if he has anything critical of the orange buffoon on any of devices, no matter how small it may seem, that he'll be stopped at the border and sent back.

If you're thinking "oh that couldn't happen" I refer you to the story of the French scientist who had that exact thing happen to him a few weeks ago. Quite petty, pathetic, childish and ridiculous really 😠

This is why it's a good thing most people here are posting under aliases :-).  If it gets to the point that they're stopping people at the border and asking them to sign into online accounts then we can learn from the master: "Geekzone? Never heard of it. I've never met this forum in my life. I don't know it. No-one has ever heard of it. Fake news. Fake news".

Understandably, there's a fair few cartoons this week, some quite clever:

Isolated country? Yes please...

(not tariff-related, but definitely Trump-related):

and finally, the buyer's (voter's) remorse I was talking about on the last page:

Some commentary on the tariffs: https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/04/04/if-it-walks-like-a-penguin-and-talks-like-a-penguin/

Let’s look at Cambodia. It certainly doesn’t charge 97 percent tariffs on US goods, as Trump claimed. In fact, the only product it charges high tariffs on are imported cars, for environmental reasons. Most other goods have very low tariffs.

But its economy (and neighbours Vietnam and Laos are in similar boats) is about to be devastated by the imposition of a 49 percent tariff on all goods that it exports to America. The US is its largest export market, accounting for 37.9 percent of total exports. The human impact of this new Trump tariff will be enormous – yet as it turns out, the grounds on which Cambodia is being singled out are entirely arbitrary. Spurious. These are not really reciprocal tariffs.

How US stocks have performed since Trump's election

EDIT  update:

Reuters - Trump Tariffs Live: $5 trillion wiped off Wall Street as escalating trade war spurs fear of global recession

breaking

One of the most pivotal weeks in years - even decades - for the global economy closed on Friday to the sound of the Nasdaq crashing into a bear market as investors fear Trump's trade war will tip the world into recession.

  • The highest U.S. tariffs in over 100 years

  • Effectively the biggest U.S. tax rise since 1968

  • $5 trillion of U.S. equity market cap wiped out in two days, bringing the total market cap lost since Trump's inauguration in January to nearly $8 trillion

  • Economists now reckon U.S. inflation will exceed 4% this year while GDP will contract in the fourth quarter, a move "consistent with recession."

I guess the US won't be needing to seize control of the Panama Canal after all.

That...doesn't look good.

I guess he had to make a tough decision in the end:

I miss these days of civility in American politics too (referring to my earlier post about Republicans being scared of standing up to the orange buffoon):

While he didn't win in 2008, at least John McCain was a civil, decent person who played the game, not the man.

(maybe this clown's surname should be "Clueless" instead of "Loveless")

He must be in the ranks of all the billionaires who lost a lot of money yesterday too after the tariffs - they're probably absolutely fine with all this happening as well? 🙄

Leaked memo reveals insane ban on words Agriculture Department can say: The New Republic

Forget DEI buzzwords—the Trump administration’s government censorship ordinance is now infringing on language that will make it nearly impossible for agencies to do their job.

A leaked memo from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Research Service division revealed Sunday that the agency has banned some key language from its vocabulary, including the words “climate” and “vulnerable,” as well as the phrase “safe drinking water.”

Other baffling entries on the memo’s banned language list are “greenhouse gas emissions,” “methane emissions,” “sustainable construction,” “solar energy,” and “geothermal,” as well as “nuclear energy,” “diesel,” “affordable housing,” “prefabricated housing,” “runoff,” “microplastics,” “water pollution,” “soil pollution,” “groundwater pollution,” “sediment remediation,” “water collection,” “water treatment,” “rural water,” and “clean water,” among dozens of others.
...
It’s unclear how the guidance would do anything other than completely hinder the department’s ability to monitor the health and edibility of crops, or aid America’s rural development—some of its primary functions. What is clear, however, is that purging such basic speech will stifle scientific research and discourse.

This is quite funny: https://www.thebulwark.com/i/160575820/fox-news-goes-ostrich-mode

Fox News goes into disaster recovery mode after the markets slump in the wake of the tariffs:

By early afternoon, with markets still way in the red, the network was on the hunt for silver linings: “Dem rep offers rare praise for Trump, vows to help work on key part of tariff plan,” read the top headline, pointing to comments from Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) in support of a 10-percent baseline tariff. The next sounded bullish, too: “Trump’s tariffs already have countries crawling back to negotiate—and making threats.” A slug quietly acknowledging “Dow down over 1,200 points as Trump’s tariffs roil global markets” was buried 18 stories deep on the homepage, beneath such hot items as “Woke Neil Young fears President Trump will jail him at US border” and “5 recipes to try for Grilled Cheese Month.”

I had a conversation with a relative of mine today - someone who I usually get along quite well with and I consider quite intelligent - and he doesn't think tariffs are good, but he sees them as a "negotiating tactic" as opposed to an isolationist move. re the tariffs on the penguin island, he said that was simply a mistake.

As to the third term thing, he said that won't happen due to the Constitution and I should "check my sources". When I pointed out there was video footage of the orange buffoon openly saying he was thinking about seeking one, he demurred.

I did ask him where he sources all his news from (as my sources seem to be wrong/inaccurate) but I don't recall that he gave a clearcut answer. Maybe I live inside a news bubble? 🤷‍♂️

Found this tonight. I was quite annoyed when 538 was unceremoniously shut down recently without even so much as an announcement, but I always found their presidential rating graphs to be quite good.

https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/approval/donald-trump/approval-rating

This isn't quite as good or easy to follow, but it still makes for interesting reading. For example, Trump is not doing great on the economy at the moment, but I wonder how he's going to do once the effect of these tariffs fully sinks in.

What's astounding is that nearly half of Americans still approve of someone whose only real actions so far have been playing Jenga with the government and economy.
