gulfa:

I don't see any comments On the National Party leader an his comments on the radio about the Pm and her baby Surely someone in his party needs to take the guy aside or is this typical off his followers. Commenting on families children.  How would he like it if people did the same to him? You cant get much lower.  JC must be rubbing her hands together. I see some have had a dig at the naming of the baby on this forum even. What sort of people are we dealing with.

Firstly this thread is called " Jacinda adern - our new PM" so that might help answer your first question.
Secondly, like it or not, entering politics opens your entire private life to the public, so comments about your kids would be expected.
Thirdly, there's two reasons you might be offended at being called a 'pinko' - one is that you're a die-hard Communist and that term is derogatory, or otherwise, you are upset that someone has mistaken your socialist zeal for Communism. I suspect the latter.
And finally, while the interview was largely tounge-in-cheek, what he said was actually on the money. He managed to pour scorn on the gender-fluid concept (which is a load of hogwash), made a good point about universities, which while controversial, is widely accepted to be the truth, and ridiculed labour's torrid social ideology.

So apart from what I've just said, my comment on that is thanks for addressing the elephant in the room Simon. You're a brave man to say what you said, but it needed to be done.

rjt123: The problem with that article is that the author treats the child like a yacht, as a mere appendage to a female's life.

Children don't make financial sense. Some people seem to forget that it an incredible privilege to have children, as any mother would tell you.

While gender equality is a noble thought, the two genders are not the same. The privilege of being a mother is priceless. Don't devalue it by putting the price of the gender pay gap on it.

I think part of the problem is that having children is too easy. Whilst some people have great difficulty, many more do not - a drunken fumble after a night out and there you go. Really just a bit too easy for something so monumentally life changing.

Well said lol. But that's a different social problem altogether.

There is an entire politics forum here to create a new politics topic in. Feel free to create one I'll be happy to contribute. This one is mostly repeating stuff and going off topic without ever reaching completion on any part of the discussion.

Again, it's Hosking so some will just disregard his points regardless, but I do wonder what @gulfa and co has to say about these backdowns and backflips?

If you take what Labour will now deliver, as opposed to what they promised, how is this any different that what was promised by National, in essence?

I pretty much called this in the lead up to the election, that they wouldn't meet these targets, that they didn't think them through.

I really hope it's just 1 terms.

You're exactly right, basically it's just 'more of the same' which was what National was promising. Only this government has managed to deliver 'more of the same' in a much more haphazard and unpredictable way than ever done before.

Yet another lie today by this Government. During the election campaign they fought through and through on slashing immigration and tightening criteria for immigration.

Today they totally reversed their policy.

Whilst it is positive news, I believe somewhere in this forum most of queried how they were ever going to build any homes without immigration.

I guess this is how to win an election..lie your butt off without care or responsibility.

https://www.nbr.co.nz/article/phil-twyford-rejects-accusations-hypocrisy-over-kiwibuild-labour-plan-be-p-216574

What has not also been mentioned is that NZ uses unique building construction standards. And how NZ houses are built almost entirely out of timber. This means that fully qualified foreign builders simply don't exist. As they won't have any experience with building to the NZ standards.

Our plumbing and electrical codes are only shared with Australia. So foreign qualified sparkies and plumbers can only come from Australia. But wages will have to rise alot for them to bother coming to NZ.

Either way, almost all foreign tradies will require more training before they can begin working in NZ. And trying to claim that a simple immigration rule change will solve worker shortages, is complete bollocks.

This will simply be an excuse to let in semi skilled workers (painters, gib stoppers, carpet layers etc). And unskilled workers. To do jobs that locals can quickly be trained to do. But wages in these jobs won't rise due to more immigrants coming in. So even less incentive for locals on the dole or doing min wage jobs. To upskill to a trades job.

It would be interesting to study whether these "unique standards" are in fact necessary, or whether more widely used standards from elsewhere would do the job just as well. For example, US houses in many parts are primarily built from timber as well.

I'm always very skeptical when a tiny place of 4 million people claims to be so unique that it must have it's own way of doing everything, regardless of the consequences of that!

There are plenty of foreign qualified trade staff who don't have registration in NZ, working "under supervision" of NZ qualified staff on projects in Chch.  There's a huge business for agencies recruiting and supplying temp staff to agencies.  In my son's last job, they had one project, couldn't secure more projects, had at peak about 100 contract workers, only about about five employee tradesmen - only about two "on the job" (the others in the office working on plans etc), and two apprentices.  Now they've closed shop.

This is one of several big problems for the trade apprenticeship training model used in NZ (and Aus).  It's probably also contributing to the poor quality standards in the building industry.  A lot of the new house builds, the only carpenter builder LBP on site is probably project managing several jobs, the carpenter builder work is being done by labourers.  Same with many of the sub-trades on site, probably owned by an LBP with several teams of unqualified staff working "under supervision".

Credit where credit is due: Labour have lifted the cap on students who complete long degrees or complete a second degree so they can still get Government Loans. This means people like my Niece, a qualified nurse, can study AND do work experience on her second degree of Midwifery without also having to find time to earn money somehow to pay for it all and have somewhere to live.

That effort was embarrassing to say the least. Some folks should avoid the press at all cost. Non appearance would reduce damage.

The real damage seems to be the widespread incompetent decision making by this coalition.

I must admit I was puzzled at the time as to why he was building such a small replacement prison.
