It's what happens when you end up with possibly the most extreme right wing government in the world in a country that has been at war with its neighbors almost the entire history of its existence.

These are the sort of people you need in government at a time of crisis.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir demanded a “crushing” counterattack in a series of statements over the weekend, insisting that the only way to create deterrence is to “go crazy” and shed “restraint and proportionality.”

Sigh - Richard Nixon's 'Madman' foreign policy again.

Hunter S Thompson was right - 'You do not even have to know who Nixon is, to be a victim of his ugly, [redacted] spirit.'

I do wonder, if Israel decides to go for a disproportionate response and the whole things blows up into a full-scalle Middle East War, if the allies will join in - I can see governments toppled and regimes overthrown, if they do. Many, many people are non-supportive of Israel and having their own country expend arms, money and human bodies will soon make the populations of the various allied nations stand up and start actively protesting, with an ultimate goal of tearing down the leadership in a "not in our name" protest.

It's a dangerous game and Israel could find themselves isolated and on the wrong side of history.

... and then get the US saying that whatever Israel does, the US will back them.

Imagine what the US would have done if another country had bombed one of its embassies. Actually, we already know what they'd do.

SJB: Made me think of 1984 (the book) where the government keeps the country constantly at war to make sure the populace stays under the thumb.

As an Israeli ex-minister put it - Netanyahu will keep this war going as long as it needs to for Netanyahu to win the next election.

I feel that Netanyahu and his gang will get what they have been seeking all along. A entire Middle East war dragging in the US and its minion the UK so they can exterminate the Palestinians. Our government should severe diplomatic relations with Israel immediately but I doubt Luxon has the physical appendages to make such a decision.

Why would he do that when no other country in the world has?

Biden won't get overtly involved in a war between Israel and Iran and it's proxies especially in an election year. It would be hugely unpopular amongst his core supporters. And even less likely the UK would get involved. They may supply intelligence but that is as far as it would go.

I don't think other countries in the Middle East would jump in to help Iran either. Definitely not the big hitters like Egypt or Saudi Arabia. Iran would be on it's own with some logistical backing from Russia. And they know they would lose any war against Israel.

A politician doing the 'right thing'? That would make a pleasant change.

I don't think we should sever diplomatic relations but we should be sanctioning Netanyahu, his cronies, and the senior IDF. Either way it will be purely symbolic, but it's the worst we can do.

Iranians are (mostly) Persians, no Arab country will help them.  Not even against Israel.

I fear that Israel may take the opportunity to carry out preemptive mitigation of regional risk by striking other nations and remove their ability to strike Israel.

Listening to a news report this morning it struck me how embedded the Israeli military are in the decision making of the Israeli government and it's presentation to the rest of the world.

The only spokesman you hear from 99% of the time is the IDF military spokesman. That would never be the case here or say in the UK. The military would only speak publicly when instructed to by their government masters.

I'm certainly glad I live in a country where military personnel have no significant say in what the government decides to do.
