The Trump fever that hit the US has hit here too. There is no global crisis. The crisis is that the USA is being led by soemone who doesnt know what he is doing, his top staff are the same, and/or went against his policies, now they aren't, where Republican senators who are against his policy of banning moslems are now told they are weak in that topic. Its an embarrasment to the US and its citizens. He won't be taken seriously and is a growing laughing stock.

When the most powerful democratic nation in the world is being run like this it will have enormous global consequences. It may not be a crisis yet, but it's only been a week. If New Zealand was run like this the rest of the world could carry on as normal, but we're talking about the USA!

Can you list the enormous global consequences? Serious question

Trade. If he plays hard ball there that can hurt. But say for NZ, there are many downsides that have hurt our farming sector for exports. Drought, exchange rates (I have seen US rates in my lifetime go in the range .44 to low .80's) If we get stung woitn tariffs that force us to drop proices or we lose volume, that wont happen overnight, we can adapt. other countries will seek other partners, China and Mexico have mentioned each other

I don't see a war or close to it. His threats are not active aggression, they are misthought, misunderstood ideas of which he and his near cronies are not experts. It will be a shambles, but keen to hear what your thoughts are

I think major military conflict (over and above the usual) is unlikely, but even the trade stuff that you mentioned are pretty big deals. Crisis level, perhaps not, but not insignificant on the global market.

And I only see radical terrorism increasing as a result of his measures so far. The USA will become far more disliked than it already is, and that ill will can easily spread to any perceived allies.

I'm no expert on global politics or trade (far from it), but the US doesn't exist in a bubble.

One of my thoughts are that 5 people in Quebec city are reported to have just been killed (and an unknown number injured) when gunmen opened fire during evening prayers.

Did Trump do it - or would he want it to have happened? Of course not.

Is that kind of atrocity happening linked to growth of global anti-muslim sentiment in a world where Trump has been pouring fuel on a fire?  Almost certainly.

It is a fact that the principle terrorism threat in the world just now happens to originate from one religion. Personally, I see no problem with what he has done other than some messy loose ends like previously admitted people being stranded when they actually live in the USA.

So during the Troubles you would have supported a ban on Catholics entering Britain? That would really have fixed things!

Not sure what I would have agreed to would pass. Fug!

It would be interesting to see the NZ reaction change if ISIS were to blow up Queen Street.....

And to Santa Claus if his elves started eating children.

You're trolling with a worn out rusty old hook.

The same could be said about the constant comparisons to 1930's Europe and its various leaders. wink

What?  You mean Trump returning the bust of Churchill to the Oval Office?  On a low shelf of course, The Donald knows that if not, the ghost of a much better and wiser man may be enticed to topple a few kilograms of bronze and direct it right through his skull.

Trade is big, but tariff changes are generaly phased in. Even if he made wholesale tariff changes, there is probably at least a year to play with. Farming has changed a lot, it will change if need be. The effct on a farm will probably be much less than a drought year. O n the plus side we and others will join to create more trade relationships to lessen the US effect.

Terrorism is already rife. We will no doubnt have an attack somewhere such as Canada just now, and blame Trump. Trump signed off an attack the other day that took 1 or 2 US lives and others, but that would have happened anyway, he just happened to be POTUS not Obama or another.

Had global exchange rates and stock prices tumbled, that would be big, but it hasn't happened. Over toime the US will slowly become less relevant. Still big, but one of a few big markets and powers.

You know what I am referring to. But  with regards to Sir Winston Churchill, wise hmmm I have my doubts, his meddling in military matters cost a lot of lives.

But tightening up on transit between the Northern Ireland, The Republic  and the rest of the UK would be prudent. It's not aimed at the religion it's aimed at Country.

Of course I do - comparing Trump's methods and propaganda to Hitler's can be perfectly appropriate.

Where it's come up - (and not very often in a 158 page thread about a leader who absolutely is using fascist techniques to demonise entire cultures and races, to attack the free press etc.) I have no problem with making the comparison at all.  It's valid.

Unlike Trump's actions, which are Muslim bans - wrapped in baseless hysteria about national security.

MikeB4: Baseless security issues? Really?

Yes really.

No terrorist action has been carried out on US soil by a person from any of the 7 banned countries in over 40 years.

It's funny how some are throwing themselves behind Trump's baseless lies about security issues for which there's no evidence, the same ones who are throwing themselves behind Trump's belief that climate change is fake or a chinese plot against the USA - when there's massive evidence that it's real.  Then they claim that the media is trying to swamp them with "fake news".

How does that remove the threat?
Are you saying the US should ignore the attacks carried around the globe?

Doesn't that tell you that existing border controls were actually working pretty damned well - especially for the 7 countries for which the ban applies?

Stuff will need tweaking from time to time - but that ban is absurd - apart from the fact it's challenged for being unconstitutional, potentially dangerous for US citizens abroad, very dangerous for some allies of the US in those countries, bad for business, education, families of US citizens etc.

Giuliani is "on-record" for claiming that Trump asked him how to go about setting up a "muslim ban", he told Trump it was illegal, so Trump asked for advice on how to do it legally.
What we're seeing is the result.  And a lot of Americans - including a growing number of Republicans - do not like it one little bit.

Of course some people will absolutely love it.  I call them bigots.
