A Florida state guard established by the rightwing governor, Ron DeSantis, under the guise of a civilian disaster relief force is instead being trained as an armed, combat-ready militia under his personal command, according to military veteran recruits who have quit the program.
Several veterans resigned after an encampment last month having become concerned at the “militaristic” training and “abuse” one disabled veteran suffered at the hands of instructors, according to an investigation by the Miami Herald and Tampa Bay Times.
Promoted by DeSantis as an “emergency focused, civilian defense force” when it was established in June 2022, the state guard has quickly morphed into something quite different, the report found.
I can't stress enough how terrifying it should be that DeSantis, an even righter-wing presidential candidate than Trump, is fielding a literal army over 1500 strong with a budget of $100mi. January 6th could very well end up looking like a walk in the park.

The DeSantis SS will be assisted by Moms for Liberty:

That's a silly comment. There are 330 million people in USA. Trump and his apprentice DeSantis are encouraging the worst of the worst.
If my memory (unreliable) is correct, author John Fowles made the observation in The Magus that the tragedy of Hitler's Germany was not that one man had the courage to be evil, but that so many lacked the courage to be good. DeSantis appears to be in the process of assembling an army of brown shirts and the stupid! ignorant! fascist women are celebrating the fact while doing everything they can to undermine democratic institutions and beliefs. It is way past time for some of those purportedly non-stupid 330 million people to stand up and say this crap has gone far enough.

"I suppose one could say that Hitler didn't betray his self."
"You are right. He did not. But millions of Germans did betray their selves. That was the tragedy. Not that one man had the courage to be evil. But that millions had not the courage to be good.”

Jake Angeli-Chansley inside the Capitol during the riot of 6 January 2021
BBC News - The 'QAnon Shaman' and other Capitol rioters who regret pleading guilty
today
A growing number of Capitol rioters have gone back on their guilty pleas and apologies - including one of the most recognisable faces from 6 January.
Standing in court, Jacob Chansley seemed like a changed man.
Shorn of the horned headdress, furs and face paint that helped earn him the nickname the QAnon Shaman, he was pleading guilty to obstructing an official proceeding. The charge stemmed from his part interrupting a joint session of Congress, and carried a maximum prison term of 20 years.
"I am truly, truly repentant for my actions, because repentance is not just saying you're sorry," he said. "Repentance is apologising and then moving in the exact opposite direction of the sin that you committed."
A judge called his apology "the most remarkable I've heard in 34 years" and sentenced him to 41 months in prison - considerably less than the maximum allowed.
Now more than a year-and-a-half later, he is out of jail early, and his remorse is gone. ...
His about-face is such that he is even taking his case back to court to ask his guilty plea to be reversed. ...
He has used his notoriety to boost his profile since exiting prison. He has a podcast, runs online courses and sells merchandise on his website - including selling $44 flags, $33 t-shirts and $17 mugs.
He is also back to spreading conspiracy theories online, insisting that he is only trying to spread the truth about a variety of government plots. ...
EDIT: 21 July 2023: Chansley's request to reverse his earlier guilty plea was firmly rejected by the same judge who sentenced him in 2021.

The NY Times - Opinion - It’s Getting Really Awkward for Speaker Kevin McCarthy
17 July 2023
Some days, Speaker Kevin McCarthy must look out over his House conference in awe and think: Are you maniacs trying to lose us the majority?
Thursday may well have been one of those days, as hard-right crusaders larded up the National Defense Authorization Act with divisive, culture-warring amendments taking aim at abortion access, transgender medical care and diversity training. ... After much drama, and much futile pleading by Mr. McCarthy with his right flank, the House passed the bill Friday, 219 to 210, on a mostly party-line vote.
Rest assured, the spectacle is far from over. ...
There is no point in feeling sorry for Mr. McCarthy. He’s a political creature. Coming into this job, he knew the risks of negotiating with, and bowing to, ideological terrorists. ...
His party is earning whatever electoral comeuppance it gets. But it is shameful that the rest of America may wind up forced to pay a price as well.
