MikeB4: The morning after it still think the final outcome is 50/50. We won’t know for at least here weeks.

Peters said he wants time. Bill seems to take that as a couple of days. Or thats what I felt from his speech, I could be wrong. I dont see this taking weeks. I see Peters meeting with his caucus, and then setting up meetings with Bill and JA. I dont see these meetings as days and days and days. What can each bring to the table compromise wise? Its not hard to imagine that in 30 minutes, its either, "ok, well thats a start, lets keep talking" or "come on, WTF"

As others have implied or stated, I dint see this as him wringing every cent and policy out of Bill or JA, he isn't a ratbag.

The writs are not in until at least mid October. Winston Peters has already hinted at that time frame.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yes. I just read he set a date of 12 Oct. Im sure Bill was talking much much less, as in days. Maybe I heard that wrong.

7 Days this week (One of the best NZ shows around and great laughs) had a political episode on Friday. Some of the interaction between the parties wasn't very pleasant I have to say.

I know it's sacrilege, but I'd prefer Grant Robertson as Finance Leader in National than Stephen Joyce. I think SJ has been a putz over the past few weeks. I am not sure what happens post election with some portfolios. I see Nikki Kaye kept her Seat. I really like her, I think she has PM credentials potentially, though her health may prevent that.

Paula Bennett made an awful comment early in the election. I understand the basis of what she was saying, but it was exceptionally poor judgement. Having said that, I wouldn't write her off from being a strong National MP, though I don't think Leader. I will be watching carefully over the next 12 months.

I think Credit to BE. Despite peoples initial feelings, that he was old and boring, he ran an excellent personal campaign. He spoke well on the whole and showed a personal and personable and affable side of him, that NZ really needed to see.

On another note. I was and have been and still in some ways continue to resent the formation of the Maori Party. I felt for a long time it was just another wedge between Maori and everyone else in the country, which quite frankly we have too much of already. Having said that, my first thing this morning was of the Maori Party which no longer sits in Parliment and I feel really sad about that for reasons I don't quite understand. I don't want to start a long argument between the usual suspects here. I do however feel, that there has been something important lost in that loss of seats.

I'll be watching Labour with interest over the next 12 months. I have maintained they were a fairy tale peddler having painted over the old veneer with brighter colours. JA's true test of leadership will be the next 18 months. If she survives (There will be a leadership vote) *and* continues with her positive approach, I will be pleasantly surprised. It will be interesting to see if they go into the community and ask not only Labour Supporters, but more importantly National supporters what their issues were and modify some of their policies accordingly. I would be happy to sit down and explain the difficulties of a small business in NZ and why their employment policies would have a significant effect on my business. While those are in place in their current form, I will not vote for Labour. I can handle increased Taxation, I could even cope with policies regarding free education if I hold my nose and try and ignore them, but not their employment policies. There are a couple of others as well.

Finally, I feel that half of NZ voted for National. If a Labour NZF and Greens Party end up leading the country, this would be a completely unacceptable outcome. Not just because I strongly dislike many of the policies offered by all of those parties, but mostly because I don't think it's what the majority wants. We have a Labour voter in my family, and even they have said they don't feel it's right.  A doctor at my wifes practice shared he had seen a teenage girl present with a minor illness on Friday asking for a sickness certificate so she wouldn't have to work Saturday night, as she wanted to go into the CBD and celebrate JA becoming Prime Minister. She was denied the certificate obviously, but what the Actual F!?

It can also be seen that more than 50% did not vote National therefore a Labour, NZF, Green coalition best represents that electoral choice.

Go with Natiional

He was a National MP so his core values sit more blue.

A long time ago. And he was effectivly kicked out for criticising his own party. And the first and only National-NZ First coalition was a complete disaster bringing the country near to having a failed government.

People forget Peters was most recently in cabinet under a Labour government, Foreign Affairs (and Racing) through a confidence and supply agreement.

He will go where he gets the most for him.

Strap in, it's going to get bumpy.

As they all will go to get the most for themselves.

I favour Peters in a National coalition than not, to make sure they keep their eye on the ball. But despite some articles saying it's a foregone conclusion that he goes with National there is a lot of water still to run under the bridge. And from what I recall he was a good foreign minister.

I still find it astounding that the greens are so arrogant and pigheaded to exclude working with a party. They are a minor player and if they dropped their extreme socialist agenda and then pushed forward their green policies, the country would probably be in a much better position. They could have been part of the government for the last 9+ years and had real influence.

Unfortunately for them, they are so used to protesting against the system, they don't have the pragmatic brain power to work with the system.

That's the problem with the fringes though, sometimes they can't see the wood for the trees.

He is kinda racist, but I agree, I could see him as foreign minister. How does he go and negotiate trade in Asia, when he has come out and said he wants to put a stop to Asian immigration because they keep stealing houses (more or less paraphrasing).

If National retain the Treasury benches i am not sure after her poor campaign performance that Paula Bennett will retain the Deputy Prime Minister role.

I am not sure how that works, but why wouldn't they retain the treasury benches?

Other than her poorly chosen wording around human rights, what else do you feel she did wrong?

Poorly chosen wording about human rights may be an indication of something, don't you think?

National wont retain the Treasury benches if NZF does not join them

freitasm: Poorly chosen wording about human rights may be an indication of something, don't you think?

Indeed - poorly conceived thoughts.

The only thing poorly chosen about the words was that they let the cat out of the bag.

Not that the opinion (that human rights aren't "rights" at all - therefore don't need to be equal) would be unpopular - quite the reverse probably.  Slippery slope.

I am concerned about that as it is indicative of a deeper belief which is disturbing.
